President Obama’s Interview ‘Outburst’ vs. Every Donald Trump Interview

Video

The gulf between the headlines Tuesday, which trumpeted President ObamaLosing His Cool” in the “Outburst Heard ‘Round the World,” and the Clark Kent-esque reality of Obama’s admonition to a Texas reporter, was comically underscored by the fact that current media it-boy Donald Trump treats every interview like he’s the king of a very crowded subway car. Why, then, did Obama’s demeanor cause such a stir, while Trump’s gets nary a mention?

From all of the headlines about President Obama’s interview with Brad Watson, you’d have thought he hit him with a phone book, but all he did was ask the guy to let him finish his answers next time.

Trump, by contrast, peppers every interview with the kind of belligerent entreaties of “Excuse me” that you’d expect to precede an elbow to the face at a Shea Stadium concession stand, yet no one ever makes a peep about Trump’s temperament.

As luck would have it, Hardball host Chris Matthews played President Obama’s  exchange with Watson, followed by a montage of Trump’s nasty manners during his interview with Savannah Guthrie, and while Matthews didn’t draw a comparison, it was as clear as the stamp on President Obama’s birth certificate: (from MSNBC)

The President faces a real Catch 22 when it comes to his temperament. While he’s often criticized for being too cool in certain situations, everybody’s always on the lookout for him to get angry, and they freak out if the needle even hints at the yellow zone. The reaction to President Obama’s “hot mic” remarks at a DNC fundraiser is a great example of this. From the reactions he got in the press, you would think he had done a Sam Kinison routine. Whoah, he pushed back against repealing health care reform. Quick, get the Hannibal Lecter restraint kit!

Trump, on the other hand, spits a Macy’s fireworks display of crazy in every interview, so nobody ever gets around to noticing that he’s being a huge jerkoff. It’s like observing that Multiple Miggs is using the wrong fork.

Now, Brad Watson was well within his rights to try and rein in the President’s answers, which tend to be overly long and message-heavy. With a scant few minutes to interview the leader of the free world, you don’t want to hear a litany of press release boilerplate while your clock runs out. You try and get as many shots on goal as you can.

President Obama was also within his rights to gently admonish Watson, as well. That’s the natural tension between journalist and subject. Watson’s mistake was in editorializing that this meant the President didn’t like to be challenged. That’s the kind of thing that rankles this White House, not “tough questions.”

Through it all, though, the President’s interview with Watson, similar to his pre-Super Bowl chat with Bill O’Reilly, resembled that scene in every Hulk episode where someone started pushing Bill Bixby around as he tries to keep his cool. The difference is, Obama never wakes up in a dumpster with his clothes all torn up, and pieces of brain in his hair.

He doesn’t have to start trashing the East Room and giving reporters the finger, but people respond to the President when he lets some emotion slip out. The middle of the country that barely pays attention, but decides elections, likes it when you take the gloves off for something you believe in, and hates it when you whine about how mean the other guy is being. Remember how that worked out for John Kerry?

Sure, there are people out there who are waiting to paint President Obama as the Scary Black Man as soon as his pulse gets over 85, but those people are never going to vote for him anyway.

“Why, then, did Obama’s demeanor cause such a stir, while Trump’s gets nary a mention?”

Because the lame stream media are a bunch sensationalist drama queens when their chosen speaks.

  • WCinWI

The difference: The President vs. a private citizen.

Hence, the media continuously makes themselves look like punchlines.

  • Penguin60

It’s interesting that the question even has to be asked.

  • TangledThorns

Mediaite, you do realize that Obama has always been treated with kid gloves by the MSM?

  • VoiceofReason

Wow Count Hackula Christopher……..arms tired yet from toting all that Obama/Progressive water?

    Obama vs Trump

1st Obama is the President of the United States (albeit not a very good one) but he is the president just the same.

Trump, says he wants to be president. Like Candidate Obama before him, Trump can lie, make up promises that can never be kept, promise everything under the sun…all in hopes of being elected.

In the TV interview, the President was being a Dick Head…This think skinned President brought these 4 people into the White House to tell his story, not to be asked foolish questions by ignorant local TV on-airs. The President knows he can get away by saying anything, because of his army of media who will write stories protecting him….hint hint!

This is a non-story. Trump is a buffoon. The local reporter showed why he is working in a small market. I thought Obama was very cool, and I’m a Republican.

  • superyankees

TOMMY, the answer is very simple to your question. One person is the President of the United States and the other is someone who might during the next 6 weeks become one of many people to run for president. That is an extremely big difference.

Oh one more thing on a different topic. Have you noticed that Glenn Beck has been influencing Bill O? He know believes in some of Becks theory’s. You should catch last Mondays O’rielly factor.
If the liberals believe that becks ideas got him canned well the big guy at fox now is trumpeting them too.

  • OxyCon

Tommy, there’s one major failing in this article and that is you fail to note the difference in tone between Obama interviews and Trump interviews. Obama is usually always treated with kid gloves because most of the media are in his back pocket, while Trump interviews are mostly antagonistic because Obama’s media cohorts are working him over, trying to destroy him to clear the field like they did in 2008.

Also, it is clear during the Watson interview that halfway through the interview, Obama is seething. Try as he may, his face betrayed him. I wish the interview went another five minutes longer.

Also, glad you mentioned that baffon Chris Matthews:

Chris Matthews Doesn’t Like Reporter Interrupting Obama But Loves One Interrupting Trump
    By Noel Sheppard | April 19, 2011 | 19:50

There are times when I watch MSNBC and wonder if there are actually producers paying any attention to what’s going on.

Consider the following brief segment from Tuesday’s “Hardball” wherein host Chris Matthews first derided a Dallas, Texas, reporter for being tough during an interview with President Obama and then immediately chastised Donald Trump for being displeased by the constant interruptions during his interview with NBC’s Savannah Guthrie (video follows with transcript and commentary):

  • Pablo

Trump doesn’t get mentioned? On what planet?

  • writer

Tommy sees Obama like The Fonz. Even when he’s having an outburst, he remains cool.

  • Pablo

Apart from that, Trump is and always has been pugnacious. It isn’t really news, but they LOVE him anyway.

Here’s a little parting gift for all the Obama fans out there. Obama has lost Independent voters…bigtime! There aren’t enough dead voters and ACORN voters out there for him to make up this large a gap. Have a nice day! Oh…and about those high gas prices…go buy a hybrid van (which doesn’t exist…Obama’s advice.)

Forty-four percent of registered voters in the poll said they would definitely vote against Obama in 2012, compared to 37 percent who definitely intend to vote for Obama’s reelection. That margin widens with independents, 47 percent of whom said they would definitely vote against Obama, and 32 percent of whom favor his reelection effort.

  • notsofast

What you saw in the BHO interview was that his cool, calm veneer is only skin deep, and beneath it lies the petulant, abrasive controlling style of the Chicago political thug that he is. America caught this in his off-mic meltdown in Chicago last week, and we saw it again in his recent interview in Texas.

    He is losing it.

So, the President gets ONE TOUGH interview, ONE, and you write this up? Funny.

Also, I find it interesting you bring up the whole CBS Hot mic thing without even mentioning that CBS has been caught editing that tape to remove the word “slugs” from it, and yet, you are not calling on CBS to release the full audio and a complete explanation as to why they edited the tape? Hot mic my clymer, more like, CBS fixed it for hehimself by selectively releasing some information, and Tommy and mediaite appear to be just fine with that?

No “scarey black man” here Tommy, just a petuland man-child used to ruling all interactions with the media; and once he gets challenged, he throws a hissy fit becuase he just isn’t used to anything but verbal bj’s from an adoring media.

“Why, then, did Obama’s demeanor cause such a stir, while Trump’s gets nary a mention?”

Because no one sings the praises of Trump being so “cool,” moron.

On another post I decried Mediaite for employing a racist like Christopher (he thinks some insults are fine so long as you only insult the right race). Now I have a suspicion why they do: it’s a work program to help mainstream the mentally infirm.

  • lonestar77

Ugh. In case you haven’t noticed, Tommy, Obama is the President of the United States and Trump is a businessman out looking for publicity. He isn’t the leader of anything and he has zero shot at winning a single primary even if he decides to run. Obama has a history of not fairing well when confronted with anything more than a softball question.

You write “The President faces a real Catch 22 when it comes to his temperament. While he’s often criticized for being too cool in certain situations, everybody’s always on the lookout for him to get angry, and they freak out if the needle even hints at the yellow zone”. That’s just a lefty tactic of changing the conversation. People who criticize him for “being too cool in certain situations” are talking about the lack of emotion he shows concerning the economy, the deficit, and the true enemies of this country, you know things that actually matter. Unfortunately, the only time Obama shows emotion, is when a reporter asks him a tough question. But, you already know this and you’re simply attempting to excuse his behavior because you willy, willy, wuv the guy.

Also, once again, you bring up something about him being black. It’s quite obvious that unlike most people, you look at him as the black POTUS instead of just the POTUS. Too bad for you.

TOMMY, i agree with TFT. You should see what you can do to get CBS to release the full tape of the Obama hot MIC. A nice small story about MSM specifically CBS’s hypocrisy.

  • Rio

This comparison of Obama and Trump by the Matthews crowd is silly, childish…. whah, whah, whah, he’s doing it too. It’s like a few comments I’ve seen trying to make excuses for the union crowd in Madison, they know the behavior was unacceptable, but, they are in their camp so out comes the distraction.

    Heh, Tommy sez:

The middle of the country that barely pays attention, but decides elections, likes it when you take the gloves off for something you believe in, and hates it when you whine about how mean the other guy is being

Heh, gloves would mess up the metrosexual’s manicure. Whining seems to be the case in this situation and he’s got his fellow whiners out in force having a big old group whine. Tears about to flow, how dare they question the latest temper tantrum with “The Donald” out there being….”The Donald”…. transparent as one can get, nothing like Obama sold himself as…..before the election.

The Politico Diary link has several clues:

And all that in a setting the White House anticipated would be largely free of tricky questions

    How dare he.

The problem: The reporter’s questions weren’t particularly difficult, but they were clearly not what Obama was expecting. The result was a viral video that depicted Obama as angry when faced with tough questioning. And it unveiled some of the degree to which the White House would like to control its message.

Angry or perhaps…whiney? but, “control it’s message.” That’s a big part of the WH angst.

Pfeiffer suggested that Watson may truly be out in the cold after irritating the president.

    Revenge, what a team.

It wasn’t the first time Obama has gotten a bit of bravado from local reporters who are granted a rare 7-minute one-on-one with him.

In March, just hours before Obama announced the attack on Libya, Philadelphia news reporter Jim Gardner was warned by Obama’s aides that he wouldn’t be taking any questions on that subject. Gardner asked anyway.

“I think as was already mentioned to you, I’m not going to comment beyond the statement that I made today,” Obama responded flatly.

“So, there!” hands on hips, tongue stuck out, can’t you just envision it?

We have a child in the Oval Office.

And you’re pathetic for throwing in the Scary Black Man nonsense. Obama loves to give long-winded answers that he knows are going to sap up all the interview (or presser) time. Come on dude, display just a modicum of intellectual honesty here. Because a reporter is in a smaller market (i.e. not NY/LA or beltway) means it’s ok for the President –whoever it is– to filibuster? If you can’t be honest enough to admit that it’s an obvious ploy to deflect tough questions, that’s on you. Now THAT’S elitist thinking.

If we’re going to hold up politicians –no matter the office– as somehow privileged in how interviews are conducted by legitimate reporters, then we really have become something tantamount to a monarchy or dictatorship. Not only is that hilarious, but it’s sad and pathetic too. Obama is such a narcissist that he actually believes he’s the golden child who can never possibly be wrong. Watch him during the debates. He’ll always demand to have the last word like he did to Hillary in ’08. Screw the debate rules.

At least Trump has matters and says “Excuse me” he just tends to over use it, but he will get better over time.

Color me Bad will never know that, he / she is, like most liberal idiots, a stupid sumbitch who will repeat like a good little retard whatever the mass mailing from whatever little chump leftist website he gets it from tell him to. Like most liberals, he’s just plain stupid. And it’s heartening to see that most middle of the roaders are recognizing these ignorant little people for what they are. In the past couple of years, the liberal masses have sure outed themselves as dumb little bastards. The few elitists at the top of the food chain whom they pray to are well educated, conniving, power hungry dweebs like Obama and his friends on Wall Street who’re laughing all the way to the bank at how stupid most of their subjects are. They can fool them forever, obviously, because of the lack of any thinking ability whatsoever, but the non Kool Aid drinker, the ones who were just plain fooled in 08, they won’t make that mistake again.

BO got spanked big time and being the kind of man that he is, BO won’t be showing his face again in Texas.

The black man is mad at their own for kidnapping them in Africa and selling them to the white man as property. Thats why they tend to kill each other all the time.

We don’t need a loose cannon like BO in the White House. When BO can’t even conduct himself appropriately and has an outburst during a simple interview then he should no longer be removed from office. Congress, you need to act to get this fool kicked out.

Mediaite’s silence, in particular, Tommy’s silence on the whole CBS cover up and editing of the “hot mic” story is really funny.

here we have someone who claims to want to present the truth, but when it coms to the truth about “slugs” Tommy has run away, silent, scared to ask why CBS is covering up for the man,. the one, the obamasiah.

Just imagine, if it had been W who said “slugs”…..Tommy would be screaming for his impeachment, right along with the rest of the media on abccbsnbccnnmsnbcetc., but since it was the O, (and by that I mean the big zero), TOmmy and his mediaite pals are silent.

    So funny.

CBS edits and covers up for hehimself, and mediaite says: crickets.

    Breaking News:

BOOK TO REVEAL OBAMA’S ‘TRUE’ IDENTITY?
    Wed Apr 20 2011 10:35:52 ET

    **Exclusive**

This year’s high stakes publishing project quietly went to press this week, the DRUDGE REPORT has learned.

After years of research and digging by the nation’s top private investigators, here it comes:

“WHERE’S THE BIRTH CERTIFICATE? The Case that Barack Obama is not Eligible to be President.”

    MORE

The street date is a LONG month away, and author Jerome Corsi, the man who torpedoed John Kerry’s presidential dreams with SWIFT BOAT, has gone underground and is holding his new findings thisclose.

“It’s utterly devastating,” reveals a source close to the publisher. “Obama may learn things he didn’t even know about himself!”

    MORE

Does Corsi definitively declare the location of Obama’s birth?

Will the president’s attorneys attempt to interfere with the book’s distribution? [The publisher vows to vigorously fight any legal action that may be taken.]

Will the book finally — once and for all — put an end to the growing controversy?

Or will it just ignite new ones!?

“When Donald Trump said he sent PIs to Hawaii to get to the bottom of all this, he meant this book,” declares an insider.

[THE CASE ranked #1,341 on AMAZON's hitparade late Wednesday morning.]

    Developing…

TOMMY, All it would take is a quick small little story about media hypocrisy regarding CBS releasing the full tape. Are you worried that your water cooler friends will start calling you Bernie Goldberg jr ;)

  • TfT

And to think Suepryankees – Tommy wrote the original article here at mediaite about those “hot mic” comments, because they made the President look tough and all that jazz; now we learn that CBS apparently edited those comments because the President didn’t really look/sound too good, so CBS had to fix it for him. Tommy got suckered in apparently and wrote about it. Now that we learn that the comments were editied to be soomething else, Tommy is silent. Tommy ought to man up and report that he was suckered and he ought to chastice CBS for editing something to protect the President. CBS not doing it’s job (AGAIN!)…protecting the President instead of protecting the public. Typical leftwing media propaganda garbage from a so-called network news outlet.

No it’s not acceptable. Not when you’re trying to have an intelligent political debate and you can’t even get the 4-letter first name of one the top 5 most talked about candidates for next election. It just proves how completely uniformed you are.

    Oh, where to begin…

Well, first of all, I wrote that it was “rather understandable” to mess up Romney’s first name (it’s not exactly common), NOT that it was “acceptable”, although I really don’t care what anyone calls Romney ( I seriously doubt it will EVER be “Mr. President”).

Secondly, there is no such thing as “intelligent political debate”, particularly on the internets.

Finally, messing up ONE guy’s name does not necessarily mean one is “completely uniformed”…it only means the poster is mistaken about Romney.

He hasn’t held a real job??!?!? This is scandalous! Why isn’t this all over the interwebs?!?!?!

  • CAconservative

Obimbo is becoming short because, his agenda has been overwhelmingly denounced by the American public, and that amount of rejection can’t be handled by a malignant-narcissist.
It’s too bad their isn’t a way of removing this inept president before he does anymore serious damnage to our economy.

I seriously doubt that Tommy could ever be critical of Obama. It’s seems like he feels he OWES it to Obama to be subserviently loyal to him.

  • Tedderman

The Texas version of “Ron Burgundy” gives the President the lip pursing, eye blink as he says something like “sure I will Mr. President” to Obama’s request for him to “let me finish before you asks the next question.”
How this became “the President didn’t like being challenged” requires a form of dishonesty practiced everyday in the “right stream media” today.
And just how does “Trumpty Dumpty” warrant the same level of respect as the leader of the free world? He doesn’t! A man whose said his daughter Ivanka has a nice body and he would date her because she’s his type, will soon fall and be broken into many pieces. We cannot take this pompous, perverted, politician seriously, can we, well I guess if you’re a birther he can be your leader. Oh’ and how are those investigators you sent to Hawaii doing? I bet they come back with great tans and no story to tell.

  • andthehorseyourodeinon

So on one hand the far leaning lefty MSM derides Trumps supposed candidacy but then use his interview style to prop up their idol’s style. Neither one belongs in the white house. If these two ever had a debate it would have to be in that new Dallas stadium just to get both their inflated egos under one roof.

How many people have you ever heard of named Mitt? The fact that his name is so uncommon is the very reason why it should not be mistaken. It’s saying Nick Gingrich, Rob Limbaugh, or Billy Obama. If Romney’s first name was Mark and someone mistaken called him Mike, that’s more understandable. Furthermore, NOT knowing Romney’s first name displays an epic lack of knowledge when it comes to politics. Someone who doesn’t even know the names of the primary players in the game probably should refrain from offering their opinion on matters of politics.

Secondly, there is no such thing as “intelligent political debate”, particularly on the internets.

That’s just bologna. Sure you can’t intelligent political debate with partisan hacks, but to claim that there’s no suck thing is completely asinine, EVEN on the internets.

Finally, messing up ONE guy’s name does not necessarily mean one is “completely uniformed”…it only means the poster is mistaken about Romney.

No, not knowing the first name of the THE most widely predicted GOP candidate for POTUS in 2012 is a prime example of being completely uninformed with regards to politics.

  • RoughAcres

THAT is your example of Obama ‘losing his cool’? – a polite request to a reporter to let him finish his answers next time? Wow. Must be a reallllly slow news day… not in truth, of course, but in the tiny world your ‘journalistic’ endeavor covers.

Did you know that the (R) Governor of Michigan just disenfranchised an ENTIRE TOWN – Benton Harbor – by negating their election of town officials, taking their legally mandated powers away and putting in place a corporate board member as their new ‘czar’? Did you know that the town’s PUBLIC beach, bequeathed to it ‘in perpetuity’ will now become part of a gulf course for PRIVATE profit? Did you know this governor was elected by only about 17% of the registered voters of the state? Did you know that his actions are unConstitutional, undemocratic, unAmerican, and fascistic?

No? Guess Trump wasn’t discussing that, huh….

Please broaden your aspirations of journalism. The Internet NEEDS honest information brokers, not more “infotainment” channels which all cover the same dozen stories of celebrities, their facelifts, their break-ups, their rudeness, their toenail polish, their mansions, their ill-informed opinions, etc.

You hit it on the head. Obama is not supposed to talk back for fear of being labled a belligerent, uppity black man.
