NBC News Reports Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak To Step Down Tonight

Video

NBC News is reporting that Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak will respond to protesters demands and step down as Egypt’s leader tonight and Vice President Omar Suleiman will take over. A potential threat by protesters to march on the Egyptian presidential palace is what may have forced Mubarak’s hand in deciding to step down now.

In addition, CIA Chief Leon Panetta told Congress today that there is a “strong likelihood” that Mubarak will step down tonight. Though whether the transition of power to Suleiman is sufficient to restore order to the country remains to be seen.

    Glad you asked.

Lawrence Wright, author of the riveting and excellent The Looming Tower: Al-Qaeda and the Road to 9/11, was interviewed about this yesterday by NPR. Here is some of what he said about Egypt and the Muslim Brotherhood:

-They seem more prominent and powerful than they actually are due to the chaos in Egypt.

-They are not on good terms with Al-Qaeda.

-They have a maximum constituency in Egypt of 30%.

-They have held true to their pledge since renouncing violence.

-They were used as a scapegoat by Mubarak to spread fear (he imprisoned a professor who released a study saying MB has small constituency in Egypt and threat of Islamic state overstated).

It’s not a matter of waiting for him to tell anyone. It’s a matter of whether or not his theories are proven right. Have you noticed all the Caliphate talk in the media this last week? Did you see Diane Feinstein (D- calif) comment on the caliphate?

The BBC from 2008? BBC discuses the caliphate in 2008. http://newzeal.blogspot.com/2011/02/on-khalifah-caliphate.html

There’s a sad sort of clanging
From the clock in the hall,
And the bells in the steeple, too,
    And up in the nursery
    An absurd little bird

I don’t necessarily disagree with what you’re writing, but the point is the army and now, apparently, the air force has let Mubarak know he no longer has his support. This is a minor change, hopefully a transition period, in which the people to whom you refer can organize real elections.

The protesters were planning to take the Presidential Palace tonight. Either Mubarak left or there was going to be a bloodbath that nobody wants. If Mubarak resigns and constitutional succession to Suleiman takes place, there is no coup. So, the “You’re a moron. It’s a military coup.” bit is, well, moronic.

I was gonna ask to see a show of hands if you think this overthrow is NOT instigated by Iran, and will follow the exact same path as did in Iran. Liberals seem to already have your hands up. At the time of the Shah’s overthrow, the same claims about democratic elections were made and we see how well that worked out.

Liberals who think this thing in Egypt will turn our well must be reminded of your poor record of predicting such things in the distant and recent past. I hope you are right, but am putting on my helmet for your being wrong.

Go back and read your history. When the Russians overthrew the Czar, there was a transitional government before the communists took over. In Iran, after the Shah was deposed, it took about nine months before Ayatollah Komehini took power. Mubarak was part of the triumverate of military officers who overthrew King Farouk- Nasser and Sadat were the others. Since Sadat’s assassination by elements of the Muslim Brotherhood, Mubarak has kept the truce with Israel and kept Egypt stable for thirty years. What will happen after Mubarak goes? We don’t know.

WHY is a GOOGLE executive the driving force behind the protests in Egypt? Doesn’t anyone else find this both odd and thought provoking? Can GOOGLE destablize governments on a whim? Hmmmmmmm…..If I were the Saudis or Jordan or any other country in the region, I’d be inclined to pay attention to how Google and Facebook were part of this overthrow of a government.

If WE go out and camp out on the Mall in DC, can we get Obama to resign?

Hosni Mubarak’s attitude can be summarised in his own words said to an Italian paper “If we allow full democratic elections, then the Islamic people will get power!”, hence the people of Egypt have witnessed thirty years of oppression, violence, imprisonment, suppression of dissent and dictatorial rule.

His job description, given to him by America, is to prevent Islam.

This has not been easy for him, as the people naturally inclined towards Islam. Cairo is the place of al-Azhar, where his oppression and kufr rule are exposed almost every time a book is opened.

As the West’s war against Islam became more and more clear to the Egyptian people, his cosy relationship with the Americans made his job more difficult, as he was forced to choose between pleasing the American people, or his own. When Obama came to power, he hoped that he would be his saviour, stating:

“Barack Obama has presented a fresh understanding of Islam not shown by predecessors”

“Under the past administration, there was a feeling that the Islamic world was a group of terrorists, Islam was hated and Muslims should be watched, and that the previous administration was scared of any Muslim,” Mubarak said. “But Obama came and said we will not fight Muslims and Islam. He is a sympathetic man, and says the United States will not fight Islam because Islam is a heavenly religion.”

Is he just naive or a hypocrite, or no more than a grateful servant replying to his master’s kind words?

In a BBC interview Obama described Mubarak: “he’s been a stalwart ally to the US… he’s been a force for stability and good in the region”.

To fulfil his role, Mubarak was happy to convene conferences in Cairo in 1994 which called for Western values. Among the resolutions listed in the document were the legalisation of abortion, sexual promiscuity among teenagers and single people, gay and lesbian sexual practices, sexual relationships outside marriage and marriages between couples of the same sex, men and women alike, and the discouraging of marriage at a young age.

Hosni Mubarak accepted for Cairo to be the venue of the conference, regarding this to be a great honour and a major political coup for him and for Egypt, despite the fact that his acceptance is a major sin.

NBC News is reporting that Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak will respond to protesters demands and step down as Egypt’s leader tonight and Vice President Omar Suleiman will take over.

    Now
    Fox cites a senior official
saying Mubarak will step down shortly and transfer authority to the Egyptian Higher Council of the Armed Forces.

The nice thing about breaking news is that half of it is usually wrong.

  • TeaPartyPatriot

Mubarak to retire – NOT A SURPRISE, he’s the ONLY person on Earth with a retirement plan that’s better than that of America’s “public-service” union members – he’s got 20 – 40+ BILLION dollars of US taxpayer money stashed away.

““I like the Brotherhood most, and they like me,” said Sally Moore, a 32-year-old psychiatrist, a Coptic Christian and an avowed leftist and feminist of mixed Irish-Egyptian roots. “They always have a hidden agenda, we know, and you never know when power comes how they will behave. ”

“Many in the circle, in fact, met during their university days. Islam Lotfi, a lawyer who is a leader of the Muslim Brotherhood Youth, said his group used to enlist others from the tiny leftist parties to stand with them in calling for civil liberties, to make their cause seem more universal. Many are now allies in the revolt, including Zyad el-Elaimy, a 30-year-old lawyer who was then the leader of a communist group. ”

Claims of religious intolerance and Islamophobia are an attempt by radical Islam to mislead the world about the true nature of their purposes… The more that groups such as the Muslim Brotherhood can keep people in the dark, the better chance they have of advancing their agenda, which is the imposition of Sharia law, the re-establishment of the Islamic caliphate and Muslim domination throughout the world!
Sadly, the Obama administration would help them do this. In Oct. 2009, they actually cosponsored a similar measure with Egypt…
Pamela Geller and Robert Spencer have an excellent book out called “The Post American Presidency” detailing this administrations helping of radical Islamic groups… Excellent book and well documented!!!
For those wishing to know more about the threat of Sharia in this country, the Center for Security Policy has just released an in-depth analysis compiled by former prosecutors, military and intelligence analysts.
It can be found at Shariathethreat.com…

Obama reminds me of one of those games in Chuck-E-Cheese where he comes up from out of a hole and you try to bonk him back down and he keeps coming up. It’s like dude, take a breather. It’s not all about you.

And then the press wonders why the people question his faith.

Zip it? Wow, you really are a rude and condescending individual. How is that any way for adults to have a discussion? You admit to having limited knowledge here, but tell me to zip it when I provide information about an insightful interview with someone very familiar with Egypt and the MB? Oh the irony. Pot, meet kettle.

Yes, let’s make fun of someone for not being an adult and then make fun of them. That’s the sign of the true adult.

As I said, if you can provide the name of a political organization that is as setup as the MB, then we can have a conversation. If not, then opinions are just opinions.

Given how the protests in Egypt have been sparked by the Google executive and his Facebook page and smart phones and Twitter feeds, any propaganda that the protests are an uprising of the “poor” is absurd. On $2 a day, the “poor” don’t have cell phones, internet connections, etc. It’s among the “poor” that the Muslim Brotherhood will have the most power and be able to incite the most radical elements.

Of course they are! Isn’t that why we’re all here, to share our opinions on these topics? To debate and discuss?

Also, isn’t the MB currently banned in Egypt?

I don’t know if it was an MB member or not, but I heard somewhere (CNN or some other station) in the last 2-3 days that they started traveling in the poor parts of the city first. This made me very worried.

Talk with someone else is what I meant. There are tons of opinions on this matter. I don’t care about opinions. I care about what political organizations are on the ground. It’s not only the US that is in this mess, it’s the people of Israel and the Suez Canal…..let alone other countries that think they can replicate what’s going on in Egypt.

Obama’s statement regarding Egypt is equating the protesters in Egypt to young people in the U.S. wanting “transformation” in OUR government! This is unbelieveable.

Reports are that Egypt’s information minister is denying that Mubarak will step down. Either way, will the anti-Mubarak demonstrators accept Suleiman as the transitional president? If so, under what conditions? If not, what are their demands?

Suleiman is being supported by the Obama administration, but he has made some questionable comments in the last few days.
