A Fox News and a Pro-MAGA Reporter Dominated Trump-Zelensky Presser, Taking Up 62% of the Event

President Donald Trump’s impact on how the press covers his White House was on full display during Monday’s Oval Office question-and-answer session with President Volodymyr Zelensky, as a Fox News and explicitly pro-MAGA reporter dominated the event and helped shape the narrative in his favor.

Trump’s White House took over the press pool in February from the independent and journalist-run White House Correspondents’ Association, which has allowed administration officials to decide who gets to be in the room – giving Trump more friendly options as to what questions get asked. The White House has also raised eyebrows by allowing into the briefing room reporters from outlets as disreputable as LindellTV to the Gateway Pundit to MAGA mainstays like Breitbart — all of whom ask fawning questions or set up angry culture war softballs.

On Monday, Fox News reporter Peter Doocy and Real America’s Voice host Brian Glenn, the boyfriend of MAGA firebrand Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA), dominated the other reporters in the room. Doocy asked a whopping six questions during the event, which meant that a staggering 41% of Trump’s time was spent answering questions asked by Doocy.

Glenn asked three official questions, although he also offered an apology to Zelensky for previously attacking him for not wearing a suit and praised Trump for bringing down crime in DC, joking that he can now walk around the city safely with his girlfriend.

Glenn’s questions resulted in 21% of Trump’s total time spent responding, meaning that between Doocy and Glenn, Trump spent 62% of the event addressing their questions. The other 10 reporters who got a question in, only received 38% of Trump’s attention. Notably, Monday’s event didn’t result in Trump attacking any of the reporters in the room or sparring with any big names over pointed questions.

Additionally, both Doocy and Glenn asked questions that Trump and a Fox News audience undoubtedly wanted to hear. Doocy asked the first four questions, setting the tone for the event. His first question was even-handed and hit at the actual news of the day, “So, President Zelensky, you say, in a post on X today, Russia must end this war, which it itself started. President Trump, you said, President Zelensky of Ukraine can end the war with Russia almost immediately if he wants to, which is it?”

He went harder at Zelensky with his last question, pressing, “Mr. President Zelensky, are you prepared to keep sending Ukrainian troops to their deaths for another couple of years or are you going to agree to redraw the maps?” “Redraw the maps” being another way of saying to give up Ukrainian territory to Russia.

Doocy later reclaimed the floor by shouting “thank you” over one of his colleagues to ask additional questions, including, “The United States has already given hundreds of billions of dollars to this war effort in Ukraine. At best, it is a stalemate, and the killing continues. So, President Trump, how much more is the United States willing to give Ukraine? And President Zelensky, how much more do you want?”

Glenn’s questioning then moved into pure MAGA-friendly territory.

After a discussion of Zelensky’s attire, Glenn eventually asked the president, “Speaking of news, it sounds insane for me even to ask it, but do you think the American media really doesn’t even want a peace deal? Because they’ve been so critical of you every step of the way as you lead the charge for peace.”

Trump then ranted for well over three minutes of the event that lasted a total of 24 minutes. Glenn later asked Trump about his morning Truth Social post fuming against mail-in ballots and voting machines, which Trump replied was “off topic” but still gladly gave a lengthy reply to. CNN reported later on Monday that Glenn was not even “assigned to the pool on Monday,” but that White House aides let him in anyway.

Doocy and Glenn edging out their colleagues did not go unnoticed in the room either, a White House correspondent fumed to CNN, “This display, especially in front of foreign leaders, is so embarrassing. Many of the questions aren’t designed to get answers, but to create another confrontation or make Trump look good. That’s not journalism. High schoolers could do a better job than some of these people.”

Trump, on the other hand, was thrilled with the display from Doocy and Glenn. While introducing European leaders later in the day, Trump offered rare praise for the press. Trump repeatedly thanked the press and added, “I want to thank the media, it’s been actually very fair, generally speaking, very fair. I think it’s important that they’re fair because this is a very important subject. We have to get it ended, and so that’s all we ask for is fairness with the media. Thank you all very much. We appreciate it.”
