A burglary suspect in Cape Coral, Florida was caught by a man wearing Batman pajamas in the early hours of Wednesday morning.
According to the Cape Coral Police Department, when officers responded to a reported burglary in progress at a home in Cape Coral, they arrived to find that the suspect had already been detained “by a neighbor wearing Batman pajamas.”
“The neighbor, Kyle Myvett, told detectives he had gone to bed when his home security cameras alerted him to someone breaking into his vehicle. Still dressed in his Batman pajamas, Kyle went outside to investigate and saw the suspect rummaging through his truck,” the police department claimed in a statement. “Moments later, he found the same suspect in his neighbor’s garage and detained him until officers arrived.”
The suspect in the burglary, Justin Schimpl, was reportedly already “known to law enforcement from prior investigations,” and is accused of stealing a number of valuable items, including two pairs of $300 Ray-Ban sunglasses, jewellery, cash, and hundreds of dollars’ worth of gift cards.
Schimpl was quickly arrested by officers and charged with burglary and petit theft.
Myvett explained to local news how he stealthily detained the suspect without much resistance.
“Without the person seeing me, I grabbed a hold of their shirt and right wrist and told him, ‘Listen, don’t try to get away, I have plenty of experience with this,'” said Myvett, who previously worked in corrections. “I’m really glad I had my Batman pajamas on because that gave me the extra confidence I needed.”
In their statement, the Cape Coral Police Department thanked Myvett for his assistance, writing, “Thanks to a quick-thinking neighbor in his Batman pajamas, another burglary suspect was put behind bars.”
