Fox Business’ Gasparino: Howard Schultz Tying Potential Presidential Run to Success/Failure of Joe Biden

According to a new report, former Starbucks CEO Howard Schultz is tying his decision to run as an independent in the 2020 election to the success (or failure) of Joe Biden’s primary campaign.

Fox Business’ Charles Gasparino says Schultz may delay his decision on running into 2020 depending on how the former vice president fares in the Democratic primary.

“I’m getting this from people close to the campaign, one of the factors is Joe Biden and Joe Biden’s potential success or failure,” Gasparino told Neil Cavuto on Cavuto: Coast to Coast Wednesday.

“If Joe Biden wins, wins as a moderate  … the chances of [Schultz] running, I’m told by people with direct knowledge of the matter, are very low,” Gasparino reported.

Gasparino went on to say if a progressive candidate like Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-VT) or Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-MA) wins the Democratic nomination, “the chances of him running is much higher.”

Schultz has not definitively stated he is running for president, but has said multiple times that he is considering a run for president as a “centrist independent.” He has said he considers both Democrats and Republicans as too extreme.

The billionaire coffee magnate was ubiquitous on cable television following his announcement about considering a campaign in early 2019.

However, Schultz has since largely disappeared from the campaign trail in recent weeks. The Daily Beast reports his aides say Schultz is still considering a bid.

A spokesperson also told the Daily Beast that Schultz is currently recovering from back surgery, which Gasparino also noted as a reason for him being out of the public’s eye.
