Nikki Haley Finally Defeats Trump With Victory In DC GOP Primary
Former South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley defeated former President Donald Trump on Sunday evening for the Republican presidential primary in Washington, D.C.
Haley finally captured her first victory in the GOP primary race with nearly 63% of the vote, earning 19 delegates. According to the Decision Desk HQ, Haley received 1,274 votes compared to Trump’s 676 votes.
The victory finally breaks Trump’s more than half dozen victory streak against the former UN ambassador and provides Haley with some relief after consecutive losses.
In the 2020 primary, Trump won the district in an uncontested race; however, in the 2016 primary Trump came in third behind Sen. Marco Rubio (R-FL) and former Ohio. Gov. John Kasich.
Despite losing in her home state of South Carolina, Haley has pledged to continue running in the primary at least through Super Tuesday next week. More than a dozen states will cast their vote for the Republican nominee.
However, Trump still maintains a strong early lead in delegates against Haley and will likely expand his support after Tuesday. In order to clinch the Republican nomination, Candidates must gain at 1,215 delegates.
“Republican voters have delivered resounding wins for President Trump in every single primary contest and this race is over,” a spokesperson for Haley’s campaign told Fox News Digital. “Our focus is now on Joe Biden and the general election.”
Democrats are not expected to have their primary in DC until June.
