An Italian mafia fugitive on the run since 2014 was arrested in the Dominican Republic after filming a cooking show and posting it to YouTube.
Authorities tracked down Marc Feren Claude Biart, said to be a member of the Ndrangheta crime family, thanks to the Italian cooking tutorials he recorded from his hideout in the beach town of Boca Chica.
Although Biart was careful to hide his face during his cooking lessons, authorities reportedly identified the mobster by his distinctive body tattoos.
The 53-year-old was arrested last week in Boca Chica after which he was extradited to Italy, where he’s expected to stand trial for allegedly trafficking cocaine into Europe.
Law enforcement told the Washington Post that prior to Biart’s arrest, he had been living quietly in Boca Chica, a popular tourist destination where he and his wife “kept their distance from their countrymen.”
However, Biart and his wife spent their free time uploading several cooking tutorials for Italian recipes to YouTube.
Lt. Col. Massimiliano Galasso, a Reggio-Calabria police official, told NBC News that authorities were alerted by Biart’s YouTube activity and knew that the fugitive had previously worked at a restaurant in Italy.
The channel was started earlier this year but is no longer active, according to the outlet.
More than 350 members of the Ndrangheta crime family, who are based in the southern Italian region of Calabria, have been arrested since last year thanks to an initiative launched by Interpol agents.
