Chicago Mayor Torches Trump for Calling for His Arrest: ‘Not the First Time’ He’s Wanted to ‘Unjustly’ Arrest a ‘Black Man’

Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson (D) defiantly said he is “not going anywhere” and suggested President Donald Trump is targeting him because he is a Black man, soon after the president called for Johnson and Illinois Gov. JB Pritzker (D) to be jailed on Wednesday morning.

Johnson, during an appearance on CNN’s The Situation Room, said “It’s certainly not the first time that Donald Trump has called for the arresting of a black man, unjustly.”

Co-host Pamela Brown jumped in shortly afterwards and added, “And to be clear, he’s also calling for the governor, J.B. Pritzker, to be jailed as well.”

President Trump, a few hours earlier, posted on Truth Social: “Chicago Mayor should be in jail for failing to protect ICE Officers! Governor Pritzker also!”

The president’s post — and Johnson’s response — comes as Trump and the two Democratic politicians have been trading barbs over the president sending National Guard troops, as well as ICE and Border Patrol agents, to Chicago.

President Trump has said he wants to crack down on crime in The Windy City because he was disgusted by news reports about how many people were shot over Labor Day Weekend.

“When I watch television last night, and I’m watching the news and I see that nine people were killed in Chicago and 54 were badly wounded with bullets, I say, ‘That’s not our country. We have to do something,’” Trump said in early September.

ABC 7 in Chicago reported 58 people were shot in the city over the holiday weekend, which was an 87% surge from the same time the year before.

Pritzker and Johnson have strongly opposed the president, with Pritzker saying the president has been “inciting” violence by sending federal agents to his state. Both Johnson and Pritzker sued Trump on Monday to stop him from deploying National Guard members.

Johnson, during his CNN appearance on Tuesday, accused Trump of “working outside the bounds of the constitution” to crackdown on crime and illegal immigration.

“This president is unstable, unhinged, a double-minded individual that, quite frankly, is a threat to our democracy.”

A moment later, he added: “This president has intentionally worked to escalate violence in the city of Chicago and cities across America. We’re just simply defending our fundamental right to our democracy. This president has made it very clear he doesn’t support this constitution.”
