Marvel Comics is introducing a gay Captain America for the first time in the 80-year history of the comic book series.

The character, Aaron Fischer, was described by Marvel in a press release as its “new LGBTQ+ hero.”

Fischer will make his debut in a limited series titled The United States of Captain America, which will hit stores in June to coincide with Pride Month.

The series will feature the original Captain America, Steve Rogers, on a cross-country road trip with other Captain Americas who’ve followed in his footsteps.

Along their journey to retrieve Rogers’ stolen shield, “they’ll discover everyday people from all walks of life who’ve taken up the mantle of Captain America to defend their communities.” Fischer, an openly gay teenager known as “Captain America of the Railways,” is one of those people.

“Aaron is inspired by heroes of the queer community: activists, leaders and everyday folks pushing for a better life,” said writer Joshua Trujillo in a statement. “He stands for the oppressed and the forgotten. I hope his debut story resonates with readers and helps inspire the next generation of heroes.”

Artist Jan Bazaldua added, “I really enjoyed designing him, and as a transgender person, I am happy to be able to present an openly gay person who admires Captain America and fights against evil to help those who are almost invisible to society.”

The United States of Captain America will go on sale June 2.
