WATCH: Michelle Obama Says ‘Wasn’t a Complete Surprise’ to Hear Meghan Markle’s Claims of Royal Family Racism
Michelle Obama is sharing her thoughts on Meghan Markle and Prince Harry’s bombshell interview with Oprah Winfrey.
The former first lady sat down with the Today show’s Jenna Bush Hager, who asked Obama about her reaction to watching Markle speak about her difficult experience being the Duchess of Sussex.
“Public service, it’s a bright, sharp, hot spotlight, and most people don’t understand it, and nor should they,” Obama said. “The thing that I always keep in mind is that none of this is about us in public service. It’s about the people that we serve. I always try to push the light back out and focus it on the folks that we are actually here to serve.”
Hager went on to ask Obama about the issue of race, as Markle had told Oprah that there were “concerns” within the royal family about how dark her son Archie’s skin would be.
“Race isn’t a new construct in this world for people of color, and so it wasn’t a complete surprise to hear her feelings and to have them articulated,” Obama said.
“I think the thing that I hope for, and the thing I think about, is that this, first and foremost, is a family,” she added. “I pray for forgiveness and healing for them so that they can use this as a teachable moment for us all.”
In her interview with Oprah, Markle wouldn’t reveal which members of the royal family raised concerns about her son’s appearance as it “would be very damaging to them.”
Markle, however, noted that she couldn’t understand “how it wouldn’t be seen as an added benefit and a reflection of the world today” to have a child of color born into the royal family.
