Anguished Widow of Corey Comperatore Blasts Secret Service a Year After Trump Assassination Attempt in Butler: ‘We Were All Sitting Ducks!’

The anguished widow of a firefighter killed during the attempt on President Donald Trump’s life in Butler, Pennsylvania last year broke down in tears as she blasted the Secret Service for failing to protect “the love of her life.”

“We were all sitting ducks that day,” Helen Comperatore, the widow of Corey Comperatore, told Fox News’ Alexis McAdams this week. “Our blood is all over their hands! I’m angry. I lost the love of my life!”

Comperatore’s tearful remarks came just ahead of the anniversary of the Butler assassination attempt, during which Thomas Crooks fired off eight shots — one of which grazed Trump’s ear — before the gunman was shot dead by a sniper. Corey Comperatore was killed, and two others were wounded.

For Helen Comperatore, her intense frustration rests with the Secret Service, which she maintains did not do enough to protect Trump and attendees of the Butler rally.

“Why weren’t they paying attention?” she said. “Why did they think that roof didn’t need [to be] covered?”

When asked what she would say if given the opportunity to speak with the Secret Service, she said: “Why Butler? Why Butler? Why was that such a failure?”

The Butler situation, as well as a separate foiled attempt weeks later in Florida, put Secret Service failures on display and prompted the resignation of the agency’s then-director, Kimberly Cheatle.

Just this week, six Secret Service agents were suspended for “operational failure” in regard to the Butler situation.

For Comperatore, the agony of losing her husband that day in Butler is still fresh.

“Sometimes I still just pretend he’s at work and he’s going to be coming home at the end of the day,” she said through tears.
