BREAKING: Nancy Pelosi Will Not Seek Reelection, Ending Congressional Career

Speaker Emerita Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) announced on Thursday that she will not seek reelection to continue representing her San Francisco district.

The 85-year-old Democrat announced her retirement from the House of Representatives in a 5-plus-minute video posted to social media.

“I will not be seeking reelection to Congress,” Pelosi announced to voters in the video.

Pelosi has spent nearly 40 years representing San Francisco, having first taken office in 1987.

The video Pelosi posted included images of her city and her long history in Congress. She was the first — and remains the only — woman to hold the title of House speaker.

“My message to the city I love is this: San Francisco, know your power. We have made history. We have made progress. We have always led the way,” Pelosi said. “And now we must continue to do so by remaining full participants in our democracy and fighting for the American ideals we hold dear.”

Pelosi announced back in 2022 that she was stepping down as House speaker. She first served in the role from 2007-2011 and then again from 2019-2023. When announcing she was stepping back from the leadership position, Pelosi said it was time for a “new generation” to lead the party. She noted at the time that when she was first elected to Congress, there were a dozen female lawmakers and that number had grown to 90 since then.

“For me, the hour has come for a new generation to lead the Democratic caucus that I so deeply respect,” she said. “I’m grateful that so many are ready and willing to shoulder this awesome responsibility.”

In her latest announcement, Pelosi offered a “thank you” to San Francisco and said she looks forward to her final year of service in Congress.

“San Francisco is the greatest city on Earth with the most extraordinary people on Earth,” she declared. “And a place I will always believe is heaven on Earth.”
