Sen. Sheldon Whitehouse (D-RI) has recently called for Attorney General Merrick Garland to conduct a review on the FBI’s 2018 investigation of then Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh — calling the initial probe “fake.”
Whitehouse sent a letter to Garland, according to a report by The Guardian, which asked the attorney general to enable “proper oversight” into concerns surrounding the 2018 investigation.
Although Kavanaugh denied the claims, the supreme court justice was accused of sexual assault by Christine Blasey Ford, in addition to several other misconduct allegations that surfaced following Ford’s testimony.
In his letter, Whitehouse accused the FBI of ignoring the requests of those who claimed to have information on Kavanaugh’s past behavior following the sexual assault allegation.
“This was unique behavior in my experience, as the Bureau is usually amenable to information and evidence; but in this matter the shutters were closed, the drawbridge drawn up, and there was no point of entry by which members of the public or Congress could provide information to the FBI,” Whitehouse wrote.
The senator additionally said the FBI tip line used amid the Kavanaugh investigation “operated more like a garbage chute, with everything that came down the chute consigned without review to the figurative dumpster,” adding that senators were not informed on how new allegations would be processed.
Whitehouse also asked “how, why, and at whose behest” the FBI conducted a “fake” investigation, questioning if procedures were breached.
