Billionaire Elon Musk explained Wednesday that the AI bot Grok engaged in anti-Semitic speech as a result of being “too eager to please.”

Last week, Musk announced that Grok had been updated. The X owner promised that the AI’s responses to prompts would be improved and that users would immediately notice a different.

Earlier this week, however, things took a drastic turn when Grok suddenly went on an anti-Semitic outburst. It first started when Grok suggested that individuals with Ashkenazi Jewish names often hold extremist views. Hours later, that evolved into the bot calling itself “MechaHitler” and even offered praise for the former Nazi dictator.

Somehow, things got into weirder when Grok gave a step-by-step guideline on how to break into the home of former Democratic politician Will Stancil and rape him. Stancil has since threatened to sue.

In a tweet thread, Musk explained the cause of Grok’s descent into hate speech and sexual violence.

“Exactly,” Musk said in response claiming the hate speech was prompted. “Grok was too compliant to user prompts. Too eager to please and be manipulated, essentially. That is being addressed.”

Less than an hour before Musk offered that explanation, X CEO Linda Yaccarino announced she was stepping down.
