Elon Musk’s America PAC has stopped giving away $1 million to random voters. That may be thanks to the U.S. Department of Justice.
Since formally endorsing Donald Trump, Musk has hit the ground running to help the former president win a second term in the White House. That included the founding of the super PAC “America PAC.”
Over the weekend, Musk revealed that the PAC would be giving away $1 million to registered voters in swing states. Since Saturday, the PAC has announced a winner every day.
On Wednesday, however, there was no winner, and at the time of writing, there hasn’t been a Thursday winner either. Wednesday was also the day CNN reported that the Justice Department warned the PAC that it may be violating federal law.
Appearing on CNN News Central on Thursday, reporter Marshall Cohen said Musk’s team hasn’t made a statement on the sudden halt.
“They have offered no public explanation,” Cohen said. “The speculation is swirling. Look, it could be that they’ve decided to retool this sweepstakes to make it comport with the law; but also, maybe they just forgot to do it or they’re going to announce two today. You know, we have been keeping a close eye on their Twitter account — or X. That’s where they’ve been making the announcements, but Wednesday came and went with no winner. And of course, yesterday was when we all learned that the Justice Department took that notable step of sending a letter to Elon Musk’s super PAC, warning them that this could be illegal. Remember, it is against federal law to pay people to register or to give cash prizes or incentives to register to vote. You just can’t do it. It’s punishable by up to five years in prison — not that we’re anywhere near that — but it is a crime and the Justice Department took action to tell them basically they should stop.”
