George Floyd Killer Derek Chauvin Stabbed In Prison On Black Friday
Derek Chauvin — former police officer and current convicted murderer of George Floyd — was stabbed in prison on Black Friday, but was not killed.
Chauvin was convicted in April of 2021 on three counts in the killing of George Floyd: second-degree unintentional murder, third-degree murder, and second-degree manslaughter. Chauvin also pleaded guilty that December in federal court to “willfully depriving Mr. Floyd of his constitutional right to be free from the use of unreasonable force by a police officer, resulting in Mr. Floyd’s bodily injury and death.”
While serving a 22-year-plus prison sentence, Chauvin was stabbed by another inmate on Friday, November 24, the day after Thanksgiving — Black Friday. From The Associated Press:
Derek Chauvin, the former Minneapolis police officer convicted of murdering George Floyd, was stabbed by another inmate and seriously injured Friday at a federal prison in Arizona, a person familiar with the matter told The Associated Press.
The attack happened at the Federal Correctional Institution, Tucson, a medium-security prison that has been plagued by security lapses and staffing shortages. The person was not authorized to publicly discuss details of the attack and spoke to the AP on the condition of anonymity.
The Bureau of Prisons confirmed that an incarcerated person was assaulted at FCI Tucson at around 12:30 p.m. local time Friday. In a statement, the agency said responding employees contained the incident and performed “life-saving measures” before the inmate, who it did not name, was taken to a hospital for further treatment and evaluation.
On Friday night’s edition of CNN’s The Source, guest anchor Pamela Brown broke the news just before 11 p.m.:
BROWN: All right, we certainly hope that is the case for the next release that we are expecting in the next few hours. Phil, Andrew, thank you so much.
And we have some breaking news. Coming in tonight, Derek Chauvin, the former Minneapolis police officer convicted of murdering George Floyd, was stabbed by another inmate and was seriously injured. That’s according to a person familiar with the matter. Sources say that he is now in stable condition and it happened this afternoon at a federal prison in Tucson, Arizona. That is where Chauvin is serving 21 years.
Prison employees performed, quote, “life-saving measures on Chauvin before he was taken to a hospital for further treatment,” we’re told. And we will be right back.
