Ken Buck ‘Favors’ Expelling George Santos If He Doesn’t Resign Before Thanksgiving
Rep. Ken Buck (R-CO) told MSNBC’s Andrea Mitchell on Thursday he was now in favor of expelling his fellow Republican, fabulist Rep. George Santos (R-NY), after a scathing report from the House Ethics Committee came out.
NBC News’s Ryan Nobles reported on some of the more shocking findings from the Ethics Committee before Buck joined the segment.
“Just an example, Andrea, of some of the things that this report reveals. They say that he’s used his campaign funds to do things like pay down his personal credit card bills, that he spent thousands and thousands of dollars at designer clothing stores that he was using it for websites like OnlyFans was using it for personal meals, for parking – things along those lines,” Nobles began, adding:
And there was at one point a time where he withdrew $800 in cash from an ATM of campaign funds and used it at a casino, and also that he used it to pay for his personal rent. These are all things that are a violation of the campaign finance laws. The committee even referred some of this to the Department of Justice for further investigation, the potential of more criminal indictments. So the question now, Andrea, when these members return after the Thanksgiving break, how much longer will it be before they vote to expel George Santos from office, which appears to be where things are headed.
“Congressman, you did not favor expulsion before. Do you now with this ethics report?” Mitchell then asked Buck after introducing him.
“I do. I’m hoping that George does the right thing and resigns and leaves Congress. The Thanksgiving break is a great time to do that. Clean out his office,” Buck replied, adding:
But I did not vote in the past to expel George because I didn’t believe there was due process. He had been charged criminally with felonies, very serious matters, but he had not been found guilty. And so the Ethics Committee really, I think, gave him the opportunity. He did not avail himself of that opportunity. The Ethics Committee found that he did not cooperate with the investigation. And I think he’s been given the fair due process now.
“And if he does not resign within a reasonable amount of time, Thanksgiving, as you point out, would be a good time or over the other holidays. Would you then favor the resolution for expulsion?” Mitchell followed up.
“I would favor and I believe that Speaker Johnson will bring it sometime between Thanksgiving and Christmas,” Buck replied. Santos announced on Thursday, after the report came out, he would no longer seek reelection.
