Liz Cheney Won’t Rule Out Voting for Biden Over Trump: ‘We Can Survive Bad Policies’ But Not ‘Torching the Constitution’

Liz Cheney refused to explicitly say whether she’d vote for Joe Biden over Donald Trump, but in terms of a rematch between the two presidents, she took the position that one is clearly worse for America than the other.

The former House Republican Conference chairwoman joined The View on Wednesday, where she gave her thoughts about the Republican Party rallying behind Trump despite her strident criticisms of the former president. After Ana Navarro asked if the GOP is “salvagable” from Trump’s influence, she raised the stakes of her question by asking Cheney “Is it time to vote for Joe Biden if it’s a binary choice between him and Donald Trump? What are Republicans that are at a loss — like you, like me — what are we to do?”

Cheney chose not to answer directly, saying that “Nobody has voted yet, so we don’t know for sure who the nominees are going to be on each side.”

“I think that the Republican party itself is clearly so caught up in this cult of personality that it’s very hard to imagine that the party can survive,” she continued. “I think increasingly it’s clear that once we get through 2024, we’re going to have to have something else, something new. I believe the country has to have a party that’s based on conservative principles and values — where we can engage with the Democrats on substance and on policy… I think post-2024 election, we’re going to see just a huge tectonic shift in our politics.”

Navarro interjected after Cheney was finished to briefly note that her prediction assumes Trump will lose the 2024 election. As Cheney called for fellow Trump critics to keep stressing the risk he poses to democracy, Joy Behar eventually went back to the question: “If it came down to Biden v. Trump, would you vote for Biden?”

Her answer:

I’m not going to endorse anybody today. And I think that, again, we don’t know exactly what the choice will be. I’d say that I will never vote for Donald Trump. There are some conservatives who are trying to make this claim that somehow Biden is a bigger risk than Trump. My view is, I disagree with a lot of Joe Biden’s policies. We can survive bad policies. We cannot survive torching the Constitution.
