The family of Luigi Mangione, the 26-year-old suspect in the killing of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson, has expressed devastation and “shock” following his arrest.

In a statement released late Monday, Nino Mangione, a Republican state representative and relative of Luigi, spoke on behalf of the Maryland-based family.

“We only know what we have read in the media,” the statement read. “Our family is shocked and devastated by Luigi’s arrest. We offer our prayers to the family of Brian Thompson, and we ask people to pray for all involved. We are devastated by this news.”

The family is reportedly well-known in Baltimore for their ownership of the Hayfields Country Club, Lorien Health Services, and a conservative radio station. Luigi Mangione attended a prestigious private school before studying computer science at the University of Pennsylvania.

While the motive has not been detailed by law enforcement, glimpses into Mangione’s life suggest heath struggles that may have influenced his disillusionment and actions. A social media profile linked to him features an X-ray of four large pins in a spine. A Goodreads account under his name shows an interest in books about back pain. A friend, R.J. Martin, recounted a surfing accident in 2022 that left Mangione bedridden for a week in Hawaii.

“It was really traumatic and difficult, you know, when you’re in your early twenties and you can’t, you know, do some basic things,” Martin told CNN.

Law enforcement apprehended Mangione Monday at a McDonald’s in Altoona, Pennsylvania. He faces charges in Pennsylvania for possessing a ghost gun, a silencer, and fake identification. New York authorities have charged him with Thompson’s Dec. 4 murder, carried out in a calculated early morning attack outside a midtown Manhattan hotel.

Public reaction to Thompson’s killing has been polarized, with some using the incident to critique the health insurance industry and system. Mangione remains in custody in Pennsylvania, awaiting extradition to New York to face murder charges.
