Las Vegas police have arrested a man in connection with the 1996 shooting death of Tupac Shakur, according to the Associated Press.

The AP called it a “long-awaited break” in the 27-year old case.

Duane “Keffe D” Davis was take into custody Friday morning at his Henderson, NV, home, and authorities said they expect an indictment to come later in the day. Police have not said what charges Davis may face, only that he was “tied to” the suspected shooter.

Davis has admitted in interviews and a 2019 memoir that he was riding in the Cadillac that pulled up to Shakur’s 10-car convoy at a red light on the Las Vegas Strip. The rap artist was riding in Suge Knight’s BMW when he was shot multiple times and died a week later at the age of 25.

The AP reported:

The arrest comes two months after Las Vegas police raided his wife’s home July 17 in neighboring Henderson. Documents said police were looking for items “concerning the murder of Tupac Shakur.”

Police reported collecting multiple computers, a cellphone and hard drive, a Vibe magazine that featured Shakur, several .40-caliber bullets, two “tubs containing photographs” and a copy of Davis’ 2019 tell-all memoir, “Compton Street Legend.”

At the time of the shooting, Shakur and rapper Biggie Smalls, a.k.a. The Notorious B.I.G., were engaged in a feud between the East Coast and West Coast music industry players of the time. Smalls was shot and killed the following year.

Retired Los Angeles police detective Greg Kading, who investigated Shakur’s death told the AP, “It’s so long overdue. People have been yearning for (Davis) to be arrested for a long time. It’s never been unsolved in our minds. It’s been unprosecuted.” Kading said that Davis’ “public declarations” led up to his arrest.

“He put himself squarely in the middle of the conspiracy,” Kading said of Davis. “He had acquired the gun, he had given the gun to the shooter and he had been present in the vehicle when they hunted down and located both Tupac and Suge (Knight).”

Kading said Davis was the “last man standing” of those who conspired to kill Shakur.
