Psaki Says Authorities Looking Into ‘Sensory Phenomena’ Behind Mysterious ‘Unexplained Health Incidents’
White House press secretary Jen Psaki said at the daily White House press briefing on Friday that officials were investigating the “sensory phenomena” that had caused “unexplained health incidents” for federal employees.
She said the White House was taking the issue “extremely seriously,” and that national security agencies were working to address “unexplained health incidents that some government employees have suffered.” She also said the employees had reported experiencing “sensory phenomena, such as sound, pressure, or heat, concurrent with or followed by physical symptoms,” including sudden vertigo, nausea, and head or neck pain.
“At this moment, we don’t know the cause of these incidents,” Psaki added. “We are working to investigate, taking every report seriously, and our national security team is overseeing that process.”
The issue has been known as “Havana Syndrome” since it was first discovered among officials serving in the U.S. embassy in Cuba in 2016. Experts have said the conditions appear to be symptomatic of radio frequency or microwave radiation, and could be the result of a directed attack by a foreign government — most notably Cuba, China, or Russia.
The White House disclosed in April that it was investigating at least two similar incidents that had taken place recently on American soil. Asked what the United States had done to address the issue, Psaki said officials were seeking to learn whether there were additional incidents that had not been previously reported.
“I can’t, obviously, speak to what the last administration did or didn’t do,” Psaki said. “What I can tell you is that our team is coordinating a full review of intelligence reporting to ascertain if there may be previously unreported incidents that fit a pattern.”
