Rep. Grace Meng Delivers Emotional Rebuke to Chip Roy in House Hearing, Accuses GOP of ‘Putting a Bullseye on the Back of Asian Americans’
Rep. Grace Meng (D-NY) delivered an emotional, powerful rebuke to Rep. Chip Roy (R-TX) — slamming the Texas congressman for “putting a bullseye on the back of Asian Americans.”
In a House Judiciary Committee hearing on violence and discrimination against Asian Americans Thursday, Meng tore into the Texas congressman — as well as former President Donald Trump, and the Republican party at large — for racist rhetoric against China.
“Your president, and your party, and your colleagues can talk about issues with any other country that you want,” Meng said. “But you don’t have to do it by putting a bullseye on the back of Asian Americans across this country! On our grandparents! On our kids!”
Roy drew heat for waxing poetic about lynchings during his comment earlier in the proceedings — in the context of wanting more and firmer justice against “bad guys of all persuasions.” He later referred to the Chinese Communist part as “the Chi-Coms,” and blasted efforts to get him to abandon that type of language.
“I’m not going to be ashamed of saying I oppose the Chi-Coms, I oppose the Chinese Communist party,” Roy said. “And hen we say things like that, and we’re talking about that, we shouldn’t be worried about having a committee of members of Congress policing our rhetoric.”
Meng slammed Roy for his comments — tearing up while stating that such words put a target squarely on Asian Americans.
“This hearing was to address the hurt and pain of our community,” Meng said. “To find solutions. And we will not let you take our voice away from us!”
