Roger Stone, a longtime ally of President Donald Trump, called for the execution of Sen. Mark Kelly (D-AZ), accusing him of “treason” in a social media post.
Stone made the statement on his X page after sharing a post by Kelly that criticized Trump’s recent crypto venture.
“Senator Mark Kelly is cashing in on his US Senate seat as a partner in a Chinese communist company that makes surveillance balloons,” Stone wrote. “He should be charged with treason and if convicted executed, consistent with federal law.”
Kelly’s original post accused Trump of profiting from his presidency by launching a meme coin that made Trump billions on paper after the election.
“Trump is cashing in on his presidency and making millions from his own crypto coins,” Kelly wrote Thursday. “It’s corruption in broad daylight.”
Kelly said he was co-sponsoring legislation that, if passed, would ban the president, the vice president, members of Congress, and other federal officials from issuing or promoting cryptocurrency assets for personal gain.
Gabrielle Giffords, Kelly’s wife and a former Arizona congresswoman who survived an assassination attempt in 2011, responded to Stone’s comments on Friday.
“Elon Musk called my husband @CaptMarkKelly a traitor. Yesterday, Roger Stone said he should be executed for treason,” she wrote on her X page. “After last year, Trump and his allies should understand that the threat of political violence is real. It stole a job that I loved. Inciting violence is unAmerican — it’s what extremists do. Anyone serious about protecting this country should know the difference.”
Stone replied to Giffords Friday evening, writing:
What I actually said, of course, was that your husband being partners with a communist Chinese company that makes surveillance balloons that are used to spy on America, which I believe is treasonous. I said he should be TRIED and if convicted, of course the penalty for treason is capital punishment. But of course you left that part out. Typical left-wing distortion.
Giffords was shot in the head during a constituent event in Tucson in 2011. Six people were killed and more than a dozen others were injured in that attack.
In July of last year, Trump was wounded in the ear in an attempted assassination during a campaign rally in Butler, Pennsylvania.
Trump’s meme coin was rolled out in January and was followed by the release of a meme coin for his wife, First Lady Melania Trump.
