Speaker Johnson Insists Republicans ‘Have an Extraordinary Record to Run On’

Republicans “have an extraordinary record to run on,” Speaker Mike Johnson told supporters at a rally in support of Tano Tijerina, the GOP nominee in Texas’s 28th congressional district.

Johnson stated:

These incumbents, all the members of Congress, the Republican majority, even though we had a one or two-vote margin, most of this Congress, what could go wrong, right? I needed an enforcer next to me to get this done, but he’s coming, he’s coming. I’ve got reinforcements. But look, we got the votes delivered anyway, and we have an extraordinary record to run on. We passed over 800 pieces of legislation, landmark stuff, to fix the mess that we inherited from the Biden-Harris years, okay? It was a disaster.

“The biggest issue” facing the Trump administration from the 2024 election was “the wide-open border and the chaos that it brought,” Johnson also said.

It’s unclear what “800 pieces of legislation” Johnson was referencing. To date, Trump has signed 276 executive orders, 87 memoranda, and 173 proclamations during this second term in office. He has issued 496 executive orders across both terms in office.

Tijerina, who changed his party affiliation from Democrat to Republican, is running against Democratic Rep. Henry Cuellar, who has occupied his seat for over 20 years.

Cuellar was previously pardoned by the president for federal bribery charges, something Tijerina has used in his own campaign.

“Our district is very conservative,” Tijerina told Spectrum 1 News. “And just to remind people that Henry, again, is a flip-flopper. He goes for Henry and not for the people of the district.”

Tijerina also pushed back against claims that Latino voters in the state are moving away from Trump. “[Latinos are] conservative. We don’t want boys playing in girls’ sports. We don’t want the whole cancel culture. We don’t want the whole woke movement,” he said. “For the Democrats right now, that’s all they’re beating on. They’re beating on that drum. And you know what? Frankly, it doesn’t beat the Mexican tune.”
