Caroline Kennedy, the last surviving child of former President John F. Kennedy and Jackie Kennedy Onassis, is reportedly living in fear that her son Jack Schlossberg could become a target of violence as he follows through with plans to run for Congress.

Schlossberg, the only grandson of the former president and a Harvard-educated lawyer, has built a social media following of around 1.6 million for his outspoken and often provocative political commentary, which includes feuding online with relatives such as his own uncle, President Donald Trump’s Health Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr.

Now, Schlossberg is preparing a bid for the Manhattan congressional seat soon to be vacated by veteran New York Representative Jerrold Nadler (D), who announced in September that he will step down after more than three decades in office.

Caroline Kennedy, however, has reportedly “pleaded with Jack not to run,” sources close to the family told the New York Post, warning that the political climate is a “toxic environment” that has grown “too dangerous, too frightening, too crazy.”

Another concern “weighing heavily on Caroline,” according to one insider, is the resurgence of antisemitism in the U.S. Her husband, Edwin Schlossberg, is Jewish, and friends say she fears her son could be targeted for that reason as well.

“Jack’s decision to throw his hat in the ring has seriously frightened Caroline,” one source told the outlet.

In an interview on Tuesday, Schlossberg told The New York Times that he believes the Democratic Party needs “more voices to push back on perceived abuses of power by President Trump and his allies.”

Shortly after launching his campaign, Schlossberg posted a series of videos and donation links on social media, urging supporters to contribute “so we can win.”

His campaign website calls for a “new generation of leadership” in New York and warns: “This is our last chance to stop Trump — it won’t come again.”
