Texas Democrat Who Fled State Compares Herself to Runaway Slaves and Jews During the Holocaust

Texas state representative Nicole Collier (D) compared herself and her peers to runaway slaves, as well as Jews during the Holocaust this week.

During a debate in the state capitol, Collier — who was among the Texas Democrats to flee the state in order to deny Lone Star Republicans the quorum they needed to redraw the state’s congressional districts — confronted a GOP colleague with the tenuous comparison.

“Chairman, are you aware that during slavery, Blacks fled? Are you aware that during the slavery times, Blacks fled? They ran away?” she asked.

“I can’t hear you very well,” he responded.

“Are you aware that when there was slavery times, Blacks fled? During the Nazi times, Jewish people fled. They fled their oppressor,” stated Collier.

It’s not the first time Collier has made headlines in recent days. She spent the night in the statehouse floor on Monday night after Texas House Speaker Dustin Burrows (R) ordered that they be accompanied by state troopers 24/7 to ensure they don’t flee again. Collier refused her detail, instead electing to stay locked up in the capitol.

“I will not agree to be in DPS custody. I am not a criminal. I am exercising my right to resist and oppose the decisions of our government. So, this is my form of protest,” she told Fox 4 News.
