Trump Country Town Hall Explodes in Jeers and Heckling Over ‘Big Beautiful Bill’
Rep. Ashley Hinson (R-IA) touched off a flood of jeers at a town hall when she told attendees she was “proud” to vote for President Donald Trump’s “Big Beautiful Bill,” with a smattering of claps in rebuttal.
The GOP-controlled House narrowly passed the Trump-backed spending bill nicknamed the “Big Beautiful Bill” last week, but it faces a rough road in the Senate. It also seems to be facing a rough time on the road.
Rep. Hinson — who won reelection by a 15-point margin in her district — held a town hall meeting in Elkader Wednesday night that devolved into jeers and heckling when she brought up the bill and said she was “proud” to have voted for it:
REP. ASHLEY HINSON: I reintroduced bipartisan bicameral legislation with several of my colleagues to fix real problems like on-shoring our food supply chain, boosting our domestic manufacturing, and ensuring as well that the CCP, Communist Chinese Party, does not control any part of our food supply chain. That is critical because food security is national security.
I was also proud to vote for President Trump’s one big, beautiful bill, a generational precedent–.
CROWDMEMBERS: (JEERS AND BOOS).
REP. ASHLEY HINSON: This bill will continue to tax relief for working Americans. I can’t believe you would boo tax relief for working Americans.
CROWDMEMBERS: (JEERS AND HECKLING) WRONG! WRONG!
REP. ASHLEY HINSON: This bill is promises made, promises kept in action. Iowans overwhelmingly voted for President Trump’s America First agenda. Ending illegal immigration, preventing dangerous criminals and drugs from entering our communities, cutting wasteful spending and unleashing American energy. That’s what this bill does.
And when Democrats were the majority, you know what they passed? They passed legislation to make you report $600 transactions on Venmo and wanted to hire 87,000 more IRS agents to come after you and target you. I think that’s wrong. And they added trillions of dollars in new spending that drove up inflation, which is a tax, a real tax on everybody.
ATTENDEE: SO DID TRUMP! Trillions of dollars!
REP. ASHLEY HINSON: We are working to provide tax relief for working Americans. My colleagues on the other side of the aisle will continue to lie about this bill being a tax cut for the wealthy.
CROWDMEMBERS: (JEERS).
REP. ASHLEY HINSON: But did you know that the top tax rate for earners was not changed in this bill? That bill did not change the top rate at all.
Republicans have faced raucous and hostile constituents at town halls in red states for months, with clips of voters angry about job cuts and the economy getting outsized media attention.
