Trump FBI Axes Ex-Acting Director Who Refused to Fire Agents Involved in January 6 Investigation

Brian Driscoll, the former acting director of the FBI, confirmed on Thursday that he has been axed, claiming he was not given a reason why.

Driscoll confirmed he was out at the FBI shortly after reports started circulating that about his departure based on sources familiar with the situation.

“Brian Driscoll, the former acting FBI director who refused to carry out Trump administration plans for mass firing of J6 agents, is being forced out of the bureau, according to a source directly familiar,” MSNBC justice and intelligence correspondent Ken Dilanian wrote on X on Thursday morning.

Dilanian followed up a few hours later with confirmation from Driscoll, or as Dilanian referred to him, “Drizz.”

“Last night I was informed that tomorrow will be my last day in the FBI. I understand that you may have a lot of questions regarding why, for which I currently have no answers. No cause has been articulated at this time,” Driscoll wrote in a message to colleagues.

Driscoll made waves in February when, as then-acting director of the FBI, he pushed back on a request by the administration to put together a list of agents involved in investigating the Jan. 6 Capitol riot so they could be terminated as part of a larger purge of employees. Reports suggested at the time that Driscoll pushed back so hard that President Donald Trump considered letting him go then. Kash Patel has since moved into the role of FBI director.
