‘Who Do You Work For?’ Trump Interrogates Reporter Who Confronted Him Over Inflation

President Donald Trump interrogated a reporter who confronted him about the potential inflationary effects of his policies, asking him “Who do you work for?”

The Bureau of Labor Statistics published its CPI (Consumer Price Indexreport on Tuesday morning, which showed worse-than-expected numbers that experts attribute partially to Trump’s tariff policies:

The Consumer Price Index increased at an annual rate of 2.7 percent, after rising 2.4 percent in May, as the impact of taxes on imports started to become visible at checkout. While housing prices — as well as volatile food and energy prices — contributed heavily to the uptick, tariff-sensitive products like apparel and household furnishings also reported sizable gains.

USA Today White House correspondent Joey Garrison confronted Trump about the uptick on the South Lawn of the White House during a gaggle before his departure to Pittsburgh.

Trump immediately asked Garrison for his outlet, then said he would hold fire on the reporter because “they wrote me a beautiful article the other day”:

USA TODAY CORRESPONDENT JOEY GARRISON: Do you believe your tariffs might have led for inflation to increase last month? Do you think they had any role in the uptick?

DONALD TRUMP, PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES: Well, we had very little inflation. I don’t know. Who do you work for?

USA TODAY CORRESPONDENT JOEY GARRISON: USA Today.

PRESIDENT DONALD TRUMP: What?

USA TODAY CORRESPONDENT JOEY GARRISON: USA Today.

PRESIDENT DONALD TRUMP: Well, they wrote me a beautiful article the other day, so I can’t get angry at you. USA Today just wrote a very good article about me. What’s that all about? So I can’t get angry at you.

No, there was very little inflation, as you know. The numbers were very good, very much inside the margin. So we have had no inflation. All we have is, we’re making a fortune.
