‘Women Will Die’: Arizona Gov. Katie Hobbs Rips Kari Lake And Trump Over State’s Strict Abortion Ban

Arizona Gov. Katie Hobbs (D) told The View that women in her state will die under an abortion ban from 1864 that the state’s Supreme Court recently reinstated.

Hobbs joined The View on Friday following Republicans in the Arizona legislature blocking an effort to repeal the Civil War-era ban, which includes no exceptions for rape or incest.

“This is absolutely outrageous, and, you know, we can talk about how crazy it is that a law passed in 1864 by 27 men now controls the lives of millions of Arizona women, but I want to talk about the effect that’s going to have on women in our state,” Hobbs View co-host Joy Behar. “I, myself, have personally experienced a miscarriage, losing a pregnancy by miscarriage and the treatment for that is a procedure that is also an abortion, and that is a common treatment and how outrageous is it that if you have this terrible thing happen, that doctors can’t treat you because they’ll be criminalized for it now?”

Hobbs suggested there are enough Republican votes to repeal the law and called for it to be done immediately.

“They need to repeal this law. It is the right thing to do for Arizonans. I know that Arizona women will die under this ban and they need to get their stuff together and just repeal it,” she said.

The governor also pushed back against Republicans like Donald Trump and Kari Lake, who previously ran against Hobbs and claimed fraud that’s never actually been proven, and their criticism of the law. The former president told a reporter this week the law goes “too far.” Trump has said that abortion laws should be left up to individual states.

“That’ll be straightened out. As you know it’s all about state’s rights. It’ll be straightened out. I’m sure that the governor and everybody else are going bring it back to within reason. And that will be taking care of, I think, very quickly,” Trump said.

Hobbs responded by saying Trump “owns” the law over his role in the overturning of Roe v. Wade.

“I am pretty tired of cleaning up Donald Trump’s messes in Arizona,” Hobbs said to applause. “This is really nothing but political opportunism coming from these folks who wanted this. This is what they wanted when they worked to overturn Roe v. Wade.
