Ben Carson: ‘Pointless’ to Worry if Ray Rice Punishment ‘Severe Enough’
Two days after pleading for the American public to avoid “demonizing” former Baltimore Ravens running back Ray Rice, Dr. Ben Carson is back to wish Rice and his currently conscious wife a bright future together.
Rice was suspended from the NFL this week after video surfaced of him knocking out his wife Janay inside a casino elevator.
Writing in the Washington Times, Carson, who is considering running for president, said people shouldn’t be concerned with what happens to Rice. “Perhaps we should all take a step back from our pedestals of righteousness and let rational thought processes have a place in our lives,” Carson writes. “The point is, let’s not get into useless discussions of whether the punishment for Mr. Rice is severe enough or too severe, because that probably will be pointless.”
Carson notes in his column that domestic violence is inexcusable but says it would be happy ending for Rice and his wife if they can move on together. “If they can go on to lead a successful, happy life even without the NFL,” he says, “they will have achieved a good outcome.”
Janay has stuck by Rice’s side. Rice, for his part, says he and his wife are “in good spirits.”
