NFL Commish Roger Goodell Swats Down Conspiracy Theory That the NFL ‘Scripted’ Relationship Between Travis Kelce and Taylor Swift

NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell laughed off the idea that the relationship between Travis Kelce and Taylor Swift has been “scripted” by the NFL.

Days before Super Bowl LVIII between the Kansas City Chiefs and the San Francisco 49ers, Goodell held his annual press conference. When discussing the record-setting ratings that the league saw during the playoffs — primarily from Chiefs games — Goodell acknowledged the impact of Swift.

“I would tell you it’s because of the great competition,” Goodell began. “Listen, the competition has been off the charts this year. Seventy percent of our games have been within one score in the fourth quarter. The young stars, the older stars, the amazing performances by teams. You see all that. That’s what fans ultimately love.

“Having the ‘Taylor Swift effect’ is also a positive. Listen, both Travis and Taylor are both wonderful, young people. They seem very happy. She knows great entertainment, and I think that’s why she loves NFL football. I think it’s great to have her a part of it. Obviously, it creates a buzz. It creates another group of young fans — particularly young women — that are interested and saying, ‘Why is she going to this game? Why is she interested in this game?’ Besides Travis, she’s a football fan, and I think that’s great for us.”

Since Swift and the Chiefs’ star tight end went public with their relationship, it’s become one of the most talked about storylines in the NFL this season. It’s now so big that people have concocted baseless theories about the NFL doing it all for publicity.

With a laugh, Goodell denied the NFL doing anything of the sort.

“I don’t think I’m that good a scripter,” he said, “or anybody on our staff. Listen, there’s no way that I could’ve scripted that one. Let’s just put it that way — or anybody in our office. She’s a remarkable performer. She knows great entertainment. I had the opportunity to go to two of her concerts with our girls and my wife. She’s the best of the best, so having her come to NFL games, having her a part of that, is nothing but a positive.”
