NY Jets Confirm Team Will ‘Move in a Different Direction’ From QB Aaron Rodgers

The New York Jets on Thursday confirmed the team will be moving on from Aaron Rodgers after just one full season as their starting quarterback.
Rodgers’s two years with the team left a lot to be desired. He sustained a season-ending Achilles injury in the first game of 2023; and the Jets finished just 5-12 with him as the starter in 2024.
Now, the new regime — led by new general manager Darren Mougey and first-time head coach Aaron Glenn — will be moving the team in a different direction.
“Last week we met with Aaron and shared that our intention was to move in a different direction at quarterback,” the two said in a joint statement published by the team. “It was important to have this discussion now to provide clarity and enable each of us the proper time to plan for our respective futures. We want to thank him for the leadership, passion, and dedication he brought to the organization and wish him success moving forward.”
In 2023, Rodgers signed a three-year $112.5 million contract with the Jets. His salary cap hit will be $23.5 million in 2025.
To alleviate that cost, the Jets — as noted on Feb. 9 by Fox Sports insider Jay Glazer — will likely waiting until after June 1 to release him. Per NFL rules, a team may spread that money over two seasons if a player isn’t released until after that date.
