Miami-Dade police ordered an “immediate review” of the detainment of Miami Dolphins star wide receiver Tyreek Hill on Sunday after he was handcuffed just hours before the team’s home opener against the Jacksonville Jaguars.
The 30-year-old was forced out of his vehicle and briefly held outside of Hard Rock Stadium but went on to play in the game – and at one point marking a touchdown with a handcuff celebration – after a reported traffic violation.
According to ESPN, police are reviewing the incident that led to the detainment. The outlet reported:
Sources told ESPN’s Jeff Darlington that Hill was stopped for speeding and then got into a verbal altercation with police and was subsequently placed in handcuffs. Hill was cited for reckless driving, sources told Darlington. The traffic incident happened about one block away from the stadium, the team said. Several teammates saw the incident and stopped to offer support, according to the team.
The Miami-Dade Police Department released a statement from Director Stephanie V. Daniels, who requested an “immediate review” of the incident.
Daniels vowed transparency in a statement obtained by ESPN.
“We are aware of the recent detainment of Miami Dolphins player Tyreek Hill by Miami-Dade Police Department officers,” Daniels said. “I have requested an immediate review of all details surrounding the incident, and we are also reviewing available body camera footage. We will provide updates as further information becomes available.”
Hill’s detainment by police – which included an officer putting a knee on his back – sparked backlash online.
ESPN’s Stephen A. Smith said, “This story with the police involving [Hill] ain’t going away damnit. Traffic violation? Fine. But WTH was he face down in cuffs, stood up, then the other officer runs over behind him and forces him to the ground again??? Hell No! Excessive! Wrong! Again, this ain’t going away.”
