Sports World Trashes ESPN Over Pat McAfee Overexposure During Home Run Derby

Social media users nearly unanimously agreed that Pat McAfee’s presence in ESPN’s coverage of the Home Run Derby took away from the viewing experience.
ESPN on Monday night aired the Home Run Derby as part of its coverage of the MLB’s All-Star festivities. For anyone who’s kept an eye on the network over the last year, it probably didn’t come as a surprise to discover that McAfee played some role in Monday’s broadcast. Joined by The Pat McAfee Show co-host Ty Schmit, he introduced the participants of the derby.
That was not received well on social media, with many noting that McAfee — who’s also a fixture on College GameDay in addition to having his own show — is seemingly everywhere.
Some mentioned Stephen A. Smith — who also has no shortage of airtime — as being part of the same problem.
That also included former ESPN anchor Trey Wingo, who compared the current rotation of on-air personalities to a “banquet dinner.”
“Let me preface this by saying I have so many wonderful memories and so many great friends still working there that I want to succeed,” Wingo said, “but he’s right. It used to be a glorious buffet where you could pick and choose what you wanted. Now it’s like a banquet dinner: chicken or fish?”
