‘Take it Like a Man!’ Ex-MLB Manager Reveals Explosive Exchange He Once Had With Much-Maligned Ump Angel Hernandez
Like countless other figures in the MLB, former Chicago White Sox manager Ozzie Guillen had his own fiery back-and-forth with now-retired umpire Angel Hernandez.
Hernandez officially announced his retirement Tuesday after more than three decades in the league. For a significant portion of his career, he had the unfortunate reputation of regularly blowing calls behind home plate. Because of this, many baseball fans took to social media to celebrate his retirement while looking back at some of his worst calls.
Later that evening on Chicago White Sox Pregame Live, Guillen got the chance to revisit his iconic 2010 exchange with the controversial umpire. During that game against the Kansas City Royals, White Sox pitcher Mark Buehrle was called for balking twice. After the second call, Ozzie left the dugout and gave Hernandez an earful.
“You know what’s funny? This guy’s making the same move over and over over,” Guillen said of his starting pitcher, “and that [umpire] crew, it was uncharted [to] call balk. The only one.”
Although Guillen was still bewildered by the call, he gave Hernandez credit for simply standing there and taking it while the manager berated him.
“Look at Angel’s face,” Guillen continued. “That’s what I like. Just take it like a man!”
Guillen also recalled a different game in which he motioned for a timeout. Because of the location of the bullpen at the time, the opposing manager thought he was motioning for a pitcher change. The umpires then got together to determine a ruling, leaving Guillen stunned that a timeout call resulted in such an ordeal.
“That day, I said, ‘Are you drunk?'” he said. “I said, ‘Angel, are you drunk? Are you drunk? Tell me you’re drunk.’ [Hernandez said], ‘No.’ [I said], ‘Bad answer because you’re really behind the play like you spent all night long drinking because you have no clue what you’re doing.'”
