Tennis star Nick Kyrgios used just one little symbol to make it clear he was not a fan of world no. 1 Jannik Sinner winning Wimbledon.
On Sunday, Sinner defeated world 2. Carlos Alcaraz in four sets in the Wimbledon final. The win was Sinner’s fourth major win and first at Wimbledon. At the time of writing, he needed just one major — the French Open — to complete a career grand slam.
Kyrgios, however, seemed less than impressed with Sinner’s performance. After the win, he posted a tweet with a single character: an asterisk.
Many interpreted the tweet as Kyrgios implying Sinner’s win was illegitimate.
Just a few months ago, Sinner was handed a three-month suspension after two positive steroid tests. The Italian star claimed he was the victim of accidental contamination, and a governing body later accepted the explanation. It was initially expected that he’d be banned for at least a year, but it was announced in February that he’d only be out a few months.
That relatively lenient punishment was met with outrage throughout the tennis world. Kyrgios was among the most vocal.
“So WADA come out and say it would be a 1-2 year ban,” he said in reference to World Anti-Doping Agency. “Obviously Sinner’s team have done everything in their power to just go ahead and take a 3 month ban, no titles lost, no prize money lost. Guilty or not? Sad day for tennis. Fairness in tennis does not exist.”
