‘They Stormed All Our Families!’ Uruguayan Soccer Player Describes How Chaos Unfolded When His Team Fought Colombian Fans in the Stands After Match
Uruguayan soccer player Jose Maria Gimenez called out the organizers of Wednesday’s Copa America match that ended with a massive brawl in the stands.
Shortly after the semifinal match between Uruguay and Colombia ended, Uruguay’s team stormed the stands. Camera captured several punches thrown between Colombian fans, Uruguayan fans, and even members of the Uruguayan national team.
When things finally settled down, Gimenez spoke to a reporter to explain how it all started. According to him, the players were only trying to protect their families from the Colombian fans harassing them.
“I know they want to cut you off,” he said to the reporter. “Please be careful because the fans are in the stands. They stormed all our families, a certain sector of Colombia fans; and they won’t let us speak on the microphone. I’m going to say it now because I know I can, because if not, they’ll cut you off.
“This is a disaster! This is a disaster! Our family is in danger. We had to get on the top of the stands ASAP to rescue our loved ones with newborn babies. It was a disaster. There was not a single policeman. Officers popped up after half an hour. It was a disaster. And we were there facing the consequences for our people. I hope that those who are organizing this are a little more careful with the families and with the people around the stadium.”
