Tom Brady Jokes About Bill Belichick’s Tough Coaching Style During Fox Broadcast

Fox Sports analyst Tom Brady jokingly referred to the notoriously grumpy Bill Belichick as a “player-friendly” coach during an NFL broadcast on Sunday.

This past weekend, Brady was in Chicago to call the game between the Bears and the Dallas Cowboys. About halfway through the third quarter, the Bears held a commanding 24-14 lead. When the topic got to the improved play of Bears quarterback Caleb Williams, sideline reporter Tom Rinaldi was brought on to report on a recent conversation he had with the young QB. According to Rinaldi, Williams praised Bears coach Ben Johnson for how tough he is on everyone on the team.

When play-by-play announcer Kevin Burkhardt told Brady that he could relate to tough coaching — hinting at his time under Belichick with the New England Patriots — Brady sarcastically insisted that wasn’t the case.

“What do you mean?” Brady asked Burkhardt. “I had such a player-friendly coach in Coach Belichick. He always told me how great I did!”

“You know, there was a high demand of excellence. Let’s say that. And believe me, when you’re a pro quarterback, you’d much rather have your coach be hard than easy. Sometimes there are growing pains. It’s, I gotta get these guys outside their comfort zone — from a coaching standpoint — to help them grow and to understand the magnitude and the trust that the organization is giving to them,” he added.
