WATCH: Giants Win Game On Incredibly Rare, Embarrassing Play
The San Francisco Giants cemented themselves in the history books Sunday when they walked off with a win in little-league fashion.
In the bottom of the ninth inning of Sunday’s game against the Texas Rangers, Giants outfielder Heliot Ramos was up to bat as the leadoff hitter with the game tied 2-2. On the very first pitch from Rangers reliever Luke Jackson, Ramos got on top of a slider and hit the ball straight into the dirt. As it slowly bounced into the outfield, Jackson ran off the mound to make the play.
Seemingly rushing himself to secure the out, Jackson turned out and made an errant throw to first base.
“And he throws it down the line!” NBC Sports announcer Duane Kuiper said. “Ramos is on the move!”
The ball went past diving first baseman Jake Burger and into the outfield. The error allowed Ramos to go to second base; but the lack of urgency from the Rangers gave me the opportunity to take third base, as well.
Then, Burger committed the most costly mistake on a poor throw to third base. Ramos, with the help of a pair of errors, had just won the game on a play that should’ve been a routine groundout.
“Here’s the throw!” Kuiper continued. “It gets by him! Here comes Ramos! This game is over!”
Although the play technically wasn’t a home run due to the two errors, it’s still incredibly rare. The last actual walk-off, inside-the-park homer, for example, occurred in 2013.
