Amazon Cuts Ties With The Weinstein Company on Two Projects in Development

In the wake of the Harvey Weinstein scandal, Amazon Studios is severing ties with The Weinstein Company on two television series that were in development.

According to Deadline, the company is dropping the untitled David O. Russell (Silver Linings Playbook, American Hustle) series starring Robert De Niro and Julianne Moore, but will take over and continue with The Romanoffs, a series being developed by Mad Men creator Matthew Weiner.

Russell, De Niro, and Moore released a joint statement expressing support for Amazon’s decision.

“We support Amazon’s decision as in light of recent news and out of respect for all those affected we have decided together that it is best to not move forward with this show,” they stated.

Last fall, per Deadline, the company picked up The Romanoffs for an eight-episode $70 million deal and the Russell series for a two-season $160 million deal.

Meanwhile, Amazon Studios is facing troubles of their own as top executive Roy Price was suspended after he was accused of sexual harassment. The studio made a decision to cancel the red carpet premiere of the new Woody Allen film, Wonder Wheel, which stars Kate Winslet, Justin Timberlake, Juno Temple, and Jim Belushi.  Along with Price’s suspension, the timing of the film’s release could not be any worse since the Weinstein controversy has revived discussions of the allegations made against Allen.
