Anderson Cooper Knocks Baltimore City Council President for Criticizing the Media

Anderson Cooper went after Baltimore City Council President Bernard C. Young for his criticisms of the media coverage of the escalating violence in that city.

During a press conference earlier Monday evening in which Baltimore Mayor Stephanie Rawlings-Blake called for a city-wide curfew and knocked the “thugs” who looted and set fire to local stores and police cars, Young criticized the news media for only focusing on the violence, rather than the peaceful protests. Cooper wasn’t having any of it.

“I’m not sure what he thinks cameras should be focused on at a time when cars are being destroyed, lit on fire, 15 police officers are being injured and stores being looted — I’m not exactly sure what images he would like us to be photographing at this time,” Cooper said incredulously. “But it seems pretty important that authorities know what is happening in their own city.”

Cooper also said it does not appear to him that Mayor Rawlings-Blake “has a firm grip” on the situation. He called it “ironic” that after criticizing the media, officials said they would be using videos and photos from news reports to identify the looters.
