‘Blood on Your Hands!’ Attendees Shout Down UK Deputy Prime Minister at Synagogue Attack Vigil
British Deputy Prime Minister David Lammy was shouted down and loudly booed at a vigil for the victims of the Manchester synagogue attack as grief over the killings gave way to open fury at politicians who were accused of enabling “Jew hatred.”
The attack on Thursday left two worshippers dead when attacker Jihad Al-Shamie drove into congregants before stabbing victims while wearing what appeared to be a suicide vest. Worshippers held the doors of the synagogue to block him from entering; two were struck by gunfire in the chaos before officers shot and killed Al-Shamie.
Lammy faced chants of “shame on you” and accusations of having “blood on his hands” as he took the microphone outside Heaton Park Synagogue on Friday afternoon.
Mark Adlestone, chair of the Jewish Representative Council of Greater Manchester, was forced to intervene to calm the crowd.
Standing in rain, Lammy began his address and sought to project unity.
“We stand in solidarity with the Jewish people because an attack like this is never felt alone,” he said. “Wherever you are in our country, Jewish people are terrified by the events of yesterday, by becoming targets, the victims of anti-Semitic hate simply for who they are.”
One man accused Lammy of enabling “Jew hatred” by allowing pro-Palestine marches and protests “every Saturday.”
“You allowed this to happen, you are all guilty,” he said while another shouted: “Go to Palestine!”
Lammy urged restraint over planned protests this weekend, telling the crowd: “That is why we stand in defiance of those terrorists who seek to divide us.” But his plea was met with a chant of “stop the marches” from attendees.
