Breaking: WikiLeaks Founder Julian Assange Released From British Jail, Speaks To Reporters

After long moments of waiting–as cable news channels kept live cameras focused on the double doors of the London High Court–Julian Assange, the WikiLeaks founder, Swedish sex suspect and accused cyber terrorist emerged to a flood of camera flashes–like the rock star many see him as.

That rock star status helped by the presence of Bianca Jagger at his bail hearing.

In brief remarks carried live, Assange said he had time to reflect on his time in the “basement of a Victorian jail,” and called his release a “sign that justice is not dead yet.” He also said “it’s great to feel fresh air in London again.”

A British judge Tuesday granted Assange release on $315,000 bail, but then kept him in custody for an additional 48 hours–until today. He’s due back in court January 11 to face extradition to Sweden to face questioning on sexual assault charges–even as the drumbeat in Washington pounds loudly for an American arrest of Assange over the WikiLeaks release of thousands of classified diplomatic cables.
