CNN Anchor Says We Shouldn’t Be Irresponsible Or Speculate – Seconds Before Asking If Key Bridge Collision Could Be Deliberate

CNN anchor Kasie Hunt told viewers she didn’t want to “get into irresponsible speculating at all” — in the same breath she asked law enforcement analyst Andrew McCabe if the Key Bridge collision could have been done “deliberately.”

The cargo container ship Dali collided with the Francis Scott Key Bridge in Baltimore at around 1:30 a.m. Tuesday, causing what appears to be most of the bridge to collapse into the Patapsco River.

On Tuesday morning’s edition of CNN This Morning, Hunt interviewed McCabe as part of the network’s live coverage and got him to reveal that investigators are going to want to ask the captain and crew what happened and look into them:

KASIE HUNT: Andy McCabe is with us now to help us understand a little bit more about what we’re seeing.

And, Andy, I’m very grateful to have you here with us this morning. You know, I think that obviously anyone who watches this video would, of course, have so many questions about how something like this could happen. The fact that the, collision was so dead on with that support structure to cause this to happen the way that it did.

Obviously, we don’t want to get into irresponsible speculating at all, but what can you give people who look at this and wonder, you know, how could this have happened? Could it happen by accident. Did somebody do it deliberately? What do you see when you watch this?

ANDY MCCABE: Okay. See, it’s it’s incredibly hard to imagine. You know, I know you think about how many times, how many thousands, hundreds of thousands of times, ships of that size have gone underneath this bridge, without incident.

So this this is like the, you know, it’s a, unbelievably rare and unexpected, obviously event, to start to think about the possibility of intentionality here, which, again, we have absolutely no information that would point in that direction right now.

But the obvious starting place is with the boat itself and, the pilots and people on the boat who will be able to give us some insight as to what was going on there, in the lead up to this impact. And, of course, you know, those people will be, I’m sure, interviewed at length. And their backgrounds will be looked into.

But it’s just, yeah, it’s it’s, just watching the video here. Yeah. There’s the space around the. The structure that was hit by the ship is, you know, five times, six times, ten times, larger than the then the structure itself, the support structure itself. So it’s, it’s it certainly makes, you know, make anybody ask those sorts of questions.

But I think it’s really important that we hear from authorities on scene after they’ve had a chance to connect with the operators of that vessel, to see if there’s really any reason to believe that this could have been some sort of an intentional event, or or sabotage or something like that, but that’s the likely and, obvious place to start.
