CNN Data Guru Harry Enten Rains on Republicans’ Massive Money Parade: ‘Who the Hell Cares?’

CNN chief data analyst Harry Enten argued on Tuesday that the RNC’s enormous funding advantage over the DNC was unlikely to matter when the midterms arrive.

Two days earlier, The New York Times published a bombshell report detailing the severe financial woes of the Democratic National Committee. At the time of this writing, the DNC was $2 million in debt while their Republican counterparts were sitting on nearly $130 million.

The funding issues had become so severe that, according to the report, Democratic leaders asked vendors not to send any bills until after the midterm elections.

Presented with these figures, Enten simply responded, “Who the hell cares?”

He then made the case that the massive funding discrepancy between the parties has never mattered historically, adding:

We can go back in time. We can go back eight years ago — the first Trump midterm. The RNC also had a huge advantage. It wasn’t nearly as big as it is right now, but it was still huge at $51 million, and the DNC was nearly in the red at $2 million. And what happened at the end of that midterm election? Democrats were still easily able to take back the U.S. House of Representatives. It was a very good midterm for them. So yeah, the DNC’s in the red, but the truth is I’m not really quite sure it matters all that much.

Enten then revealed the Republicans’ funding advantage was “part of a larger pattern” going back decades. According to data pulled from the FEC, with a Republican president in the White House, the RNC has raised more than the DNC going into the midterms every time since 1982.

“The RNC always outraises the DNC in midterms when there’s a Republican president,” Enten said. “These complaints have been heard for years, that the idea that the DNC, just simply put, is not the money-raising machine. We hear every single midterm cycle. Now, maybe it’s greater this midterm cycle because they’re literally in the red; but the truth is, looking back through history, it always happens and it pretty much never actually matters.
