CNN’s Harry Enten Torpedoes Schumer’s Claim Voter ID Is ‘Jim Crow’ Legislation: ‘The American People Are With Nicki Minaj!’

Sen. Chuck Schumer (D-NY) may believe voter ID laws are racist — but most Americans do not agree with him, CNN chief data analyst Harry Enten showed on Tuesday.

The data guru blew to smithereens any belief there is a national divide on the issue during a segment on CNN News Central — and gave a shoutout to pro-Trump rapper Nicki Minaj, who has recently argued any “sensible” nation would require ID to vote.

“The American people are with Nicki Minaj,” Enten declared.

He said all polling going back to 2018 showed at least 75% of Americans back voter ID. That includes data from last year, which showed a whopping 83% of citizens were in favor of it.

Anchor John Berman then asked him how it broke down along party lines; Enten told him this is one issue where both sides are mostly aligned.

“Normally, you might expect hey, there’d be a big divide by party, with Republicans really for it and Democrats really against it,” Enten said. “But not really here.”

Enten showed that 71% of Dems and 95% of Republicans backed voter ID, based on 2025 data from Pew.

“It’s not really all that controversial,” he added. “The American people are with Nicki Minaj, whether they are Republican or even if they are Democrats.”

He was referring to Minaj’s X post on Sunday where she expressed shock that it was even being debated.

“What sensible forward thinking cutting edge leading nation is having a DEBATE on whether or not there should be VOTER ID?!?!!!! Like?!?!? They’re actually fighting NOT to have ppl present ID while voting for your leaders!!!!!” Minaj said. “Do you get it?!?!!!! Do you get it now?!?!!!”

Minaj was born in Trinidad and Tobago and is not a U.S. citizen, but she recently received one of President Donald Trump’s $1 million Gold Cards that expedite the visa process — although The New York Times reported it was merely a “memento” and would not help her citizenship push.

Voter ID is in the news as Republicans are trying to add the SAVE Act to a funding deal backed by the president. The law would require people to provide proof of American citizenship to vote in federal elections.

Schumer said on Monday that Democrats would nuke any deal that includes voter ID.

“I have said it before and I’ll say it again, the SAVE Act would impose Jim Crow type laws to the entire country and is dead on arrival in the Senate,” Schumer said. “It is a poison pill that will kill any legislation that it is attached to. If House Republicans add the SAVE Act to the bipartisan appropriations package it will lead to another prolonged Trump government shutdown.”
