CNN’s Laura Coates Airs Supercut of Trump Trashing Politicians for ‘Getting Rich’ While in Office

CNN host Laura Coates aired a supercut of clips spanning a decade as she contrasted President Donald Trump’s past rhetoric, trashing politicians for “getting rich” while in office, as she lambasted his recently revealed “billion-dollar windfall.”

Trump’s latest annual financial disclosure report, released Tuesday by the U.S. Office of Government Ethics, showed that his business empire generated massive income during 2025, including more than $1 billion tied to cryptocurrency ventures.

Among the largest revenue streams were more than $635 million from a licensing agreement with Celebration Coins and roughly $500 million in proceeds from token sales distributed by World Liberty Financial LLC, the Trump family-backed crypto company founded in 2024.

During her monologue on Wednesday night’s Laura Coates Live, the host said that Trump’s campaign was “supposedly built on an attack line” against such profiteering in Washington, D.C., promising voters he’d end corruption.

“Remember, ‘Drain the Swamp’? Do you remember speech after speech where he pointed the finger at the establishment for getting rich at the expense of the little guy?” she asked.

“And there is a lot of tape,” she said, before rolling the minute-long video.

The supercut of Trump’s remarks stretched from his 2016 presidential campaign through his first term, compiling repeated attacks on Washington politicians and what he described as a culture of self-enrichment in the nation’s capital.

In footage from a June 2016 campaign rally targeting then-Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton, Trump said: “The insiders wrote the rules of the game to keep themselves in power and in the money. Hillary Clinton has perfected the politics of personal profit and even theft.”

Another clip, from a 2019 campaign rally, Trump used the same rhetoric to attack former President Joe Biden’s family: “These corrupt politicians and the radical leftists got rich bleeding America dry. The Bidens got rich and that is substantiated while America got robbed.”

In a 2020 campaign appearance, Trump argued elected officials had abandoned the very people they promised to represent, saying: “Politicians ran for office, promising to protect American workers but then they went to Washington and they lined their pockets with special interest cash.”

Another clip from November 2020 featured Trump renewing one of his signature campaign promises, declaring: “We will dethrone the failed political class, and we will drain the Washington swamp.”

The montage also included remarks from Trump’s 2017 inaugural address, in which he said: “For too long, a small group in our nation’s capital has reaped the rewards of government. While the people have borne the cost.”

The earliest footage in the compilation came from the 2016 campaign, when Trump accused the political establishment of enriching itself at the public’s expense: “The Washington establishment and the financial and media corporations that fund it exist for only one reason to protect and enrich itself.”

As the reel came to an end, Coates asked: “For nearly a decade, that has been his case against Washington. Now, his own financial disclosure: Is it Exhibit A against him?”
