Cokie Roberts: Clinton Campaigning with Dems ‘Such a Redemption’ After 2000, 2008

Cokie Roberts told a Morning Joe panel Wednesday morning that Bill Clinton’s nationwide surrogate campaigner status for the Democrat party was a “redemption” for the former president after the 2000 election, in which candidate and Clinton Vice President Al Gore distanced himself from Clinton.

“This is such a redemption for Bill Clinton, because, of course, in the 2000 election, Al Gore didn’t want him campaigning for him,” Roberts said.

“Or in ’08,” Bloomberg columnist Al Hunt quipped, “when Hillary Clinton didn’t want him campaigning for her. So it is a comeback.”

“He was chafing at the bit to get out there, and now everybody wants him,” Roberts added.

Clinton — not, notably, President Barack Obama — was out campaigning yesterday with Alison Lundergran Grimes, the Democratic candidate in Kentucky looking to unseat Senator Mitch McConnell (R-KY). As Clinton’s presence on the trail grows, McConnell’s fellow Senator Rand Paul (R-KY) is seeking to complicate it by continually invoking Clinton’s presidential scandal involving Monica Lewinsky.
