Dana Perino Aghast at Gavin Newsom Tweeting Like Trump: ‘You Are Making a Fool of Yourself!’
Fox News co-host Dana Perino urged California Gov. Gavin Newsom to “put the phone away” and stop using social media on Monday after Newsom made a series of posts imitating President Donald Trump’s all-caps rants.
“For the last week, Gavin Newsom– and why am I giving him advice? You have to stop it with the Twitter thing,” said Perino on The Five. “I don’t know where his wife is. If I were his wife, I would say, ‘You are making a fool of yourself, stop it!’ Do not let your staff tweet, and if you are doing it yourself, put the phone away and start over.”
She concluded, “He’s got a big job as governor of California, but if he wants an even bigger job, he has to be a little bit more serious.”
In a social media post, Perino added, “Copying isn’t a good look and it isn’t working – he should come up with his own original content,” to which former Obama White House speechwriter Jon Favreau replied, “I mean, it’s pretty clearly a parody of Trump’s absolutely insane all caps, often non-sensical posts. Probably why all the people in my life who aren’t political junkies keep reaching out to say they don’t know much about Newsom but think the tweets are hilarious… Humor and mockery can be quite effective!”
“Cool if it works and he’s your 2028 nom, I will buy you dinner,” Perino shot back.
Fox News anchor Trace Gallagher also criticized Newsom’s Trump parody posts.
“I think he’s trying to be funny,” reacted Gallagher on Friday. “I don’t know what he’s trying to do, but it comes across as childish.”
Following Trump’s meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin, Newsom mocked, “TRUMP JUST FLED THE PODIUM WITH PUTIN — NO QUESTIONS, NOTHING! TOTAL LOW ENERGY. THE MAN LOOKED LIKE HE’D JUST EATEN 3 BUCKETS OF KFC WITH VLAD. IS HE AFRAID THE PRESS WILL ASK ABOUT ME??? (AMERICA’S FAVORITE GOVERNOR).”
He continued, “MANY PEOPLE ARE SAYING HE BEGGED PUTIN TO HOLD HIS HANDS (TINY) ON THE WAY OUT. ADMIT IT, DONNIE J… YOU’RE TERRIFIED BECAUSE THIS WAS THE WORST WEEK OF YOUR LIFE BECAUSE OF ME, GAVIN C. NEWSOM.”
